RESOLVED, That the minutes of the February 28 & March 28, 2018 Community Police
Board meeting be approved as published.
Carried Unanimously
Report from the Police Department:
A representative from the Police Department was not present to report.
Report from Staff:
The Board was introduced to Public Information Specialist Melody Faraday, who will be
the Staff member for the Community Police Board moving forward.
New Business:
Two new compliments were received for IPD. The compliments were internal and did
not receive an individual letter.
Protocol for handling compliments was discussed and it was decided that all
compliments will be distributed to the Community Police Board via e-mail. Internal
compliments will not receive an individual letter. External compliments will be shared
with the Board during meetings as well as addressed to the officer(s) via a letter from
the City Clerk’s Office on behalf of the Community Police Board.
A discussion regarding the Police activity on Titus Avenue earlier in May was held. A
more public explanation by IPD of events like this was suggested.
There has been a steady decrease in complaints filed against IPD. Chair Kane noted
that she would contact Deputy Chief Monticello to inquire whether the issuing of body
cameras to Police Officers has effected the flow of complaints; or whether IPD has been
handling additional complaints internally, directly through the Police Chief. They further
discussed the impact that the IPD Satellite office was having on the West End and West
Village.
A discussion regarding the new Public Safety and Information Commission was held.
The Board discussed the new Commission’s role and how it differs from that of the
Community Police Board. The Board decided to invite Public Safety and Information
Commission chair Davi Mozie to the next Board meeting.
Report from Common Council:
Alderperson Kerslick reported that the “Officer Next Door” program in the West Village
Apartments was ended by the IPD. West Village safety has been discussed by
Common Council and is on the Public Safety and Information Commission work plan for
future discussion.
A discussion regarding the current conditions in West Village followed with Chair Kane
resolving to contact Deputy Chief Monticello regarding IPD’s presence and plan moving
forward regarding West Village.
