COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC:
Alderperson Cynthia Brock of the First Ward addressed the Board regarding
issues that the families and children who live in the W est Village Apartments
continue to endure such as drug activity, noise, physical altercations and
intimidation. She voiced her belief that most of these issues are a result of the
lack of professional management of the housing complex. She described the
efforts she has taken such as reaching out to HUD and the Ithaca Housing
Authority, and asked if there might be additional venues to explore. Discussion
followed regarding the Officer Next Door program and the other initiatives that
the Ithaca Police Department has tried in order to mitigate the situation for the
residents. Other ideas were shared such as researching the terms of the
complex’s PILOT agreement (payment in lieu of taxes), reaching out to
Congressman Reed, Senator Schumer, Assemblywoman Lifton, and the Attorney
General.
REPORT FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Acting Deputy Chief Young and Deputy Chief Monticello both addressed the
board regarding the activities of the Ithaca Police Department.
New officers are in field training which should be complete around the
middle of September.
Two new candidates have been interviewed and if offered the positions,
they will attend the next Academy held this fall in Syracuse.
The Police Chief interviews will begin next month.
Tuesday is National Night Out in Conway Park and Titus Towers.
The Ithaca Police Department is working on holding their community BBQ
later in the fall along with an open house in October.
