Revision of Pre-employment Physical Performance Assessment for

Fire Chief Wilbur and Assistant Fire Chief LaBuff presented a
request to revise sections of the pre-employment Physical
Performance Assessment (PPA) for firefighter candidates, to make it
more similar to the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
administered by the State Fire Academy. New firefighters are now
required to pass the CPAT as part of their state-mandated training.
The revisions include modifications to some of the eight stations,
and the establishment of an eighteen minute time limit for
completion of the PPA. Currently, there is no time limit. The
time limit for the NYS CPAT is ten minutes and twenty seconds.
Chief Wilbur stated that the revised PPA will also be used to
evaluate volunteer and bunker firefighters, to maintain consistency
throughout the department .
