REPORT FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT: Acting Deputy Police Chief Young reported that the police department is gearing up for the summer. They will have extra patrols on for college parties, noting that when warm weather spikes the number of calls pick up. Deputy Police Chief Monticello reported that the shooting incident on the Commons had good witnesses and they were able to quickly apprehend the suspect. The Police Department currently has 3 vacancies along with the Police Chief position. Officers Scott Hoffman and John Arsenault have retired, there are 4 officers in the academy, and 2 officers are out injured. The department used to have 78 officers and now has 63. Many events will be coming up that will be in need of extra patrol units as follows: Mud Sweat & Cheers, Job & Justice, Prospect Street Party, Kendal Ave Party, Ithaca Skate Jam, and Slope Day. The overtime slots are hard to fill as some of the officers are already working overtime to cover shifts and the extra events put demands on overtime coverage. The next police exam will be held in November. Further discussion followed on the floor regarding the May 2, 2017 public input session related to the proposed new board and committee structure for the City. Commissioners raised concerns about the future of the Community Police Board, as they have heard that the Working Group is recommending that they only meet when complaints have been submitted and investigations are being conducted. Chair Kane noted that she would address this issue with Common Council Liaison Kerslick to ascertain additional information. ADJOURNMENT: On a motion the meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted: Cindie L. Day, Information Management Specialist For the City Clerk’s Office
