The Minutes from July, 2015 were tabled for next month’s meetings as there was not a quorum to vote on them. Marty Schreiber is the Coordinator of the new Ithaca Bike Rental Program which was started in June of this year with the help of a Tompkins County Tourism Grant for the purchasing of 12 adult bikes, 3 kids bikes and one adult trike. He passed around brochures with the information regarding the program. Since June, 263 individuals have rented bikes of these 123 were of Tompkins County. Need to target Tompkins County to get more folks aware of this. Recently they also started selling ice cream from the trike at Stewart Park and have sold $90 worth of products so far. He has advertising and marketing information with most of the lodging places in the county as well as Boat Yard Grill and Corks N More and hoping to work with GreenStar soon. He just hired an Assistant for the program, Sarah Loomis. He is also currently writing on a 2nd grant for the Tourism and can apply a third time next year, which will be used to purchase more bikes and a few more trikes. He had 4 YES workers for the summer and they did marketing, bike maintenance and checks. They learned valuable skills, such as running a business, marketing and using software. He is currently negotiated with Cass Park to see if they can open a bike rental over there and that would allow folks to rent on each end of town and to also ride the trail and drop off at either location. They will be marking at the Ithaca High School now that it is back in session. He is also doing an after school program with middle school students to teach basic bike repair and maintenance of bikes and he hopes to have riding groups on the trail. This will be a 6-week program. Currently riders use the Cayuga Lake Trail and Diamond Head and other adjoining trails, as there are limits of where they can ride and take the bikes. He worked with the City Attorney’s Office to come up with a 2-page waiver legal agreement that each renter must sign before taking the bike. He has helmets, baskets, water and water bottles available to renters. He has had some assistance with other bike businesses in the area including: Glen Swan, Cayuga Cyclery, Boxi Bikes, the Outdoor Store and Big Red Bikes. Marty Schreiber is also the Coordinator of the Youth Council Program. New member packets were passed around to the board members and he asked that if any board member new a student that would be interested to please give them out. He has more copies and if more are needed, board members can contact him for more. He has several events that the program has been doing annually; Ithaca is Community Service and Kick Butts Day which is in collaboration with Cayuga Medical Center and GIAC. He is going to focus on more civic areas this year. He tried to focus the teens’ energy; give them tools; knowledge; to make positive change within the City of Ithaca and Tompkins County. They also have a training series each year and work with the YES Program for this. They will be working on public presentations and hope that they will play an active role in the Ithaca Bike Rental Programming and maybe Safe Routes to School. This is Marty’s third year with Youth Council and he has learned a lot and enjoys the teens. The program meets once a week and the budget for Youth Council pays his salary and a few program supplies and snacks for meetings and events. The program also does four presentations to Common Council and are active with the Mayor. They also worked with the Department of Justice and attended racial profiling training and came up with a survey and 400 students completed this survey and the results were presented to the police board, and they were well received by them. They hope to do this again this year and will be revising the survey. They have a Chair, Co Chair, Secretary and Vibe Watcher and these are voted on each year and one of the meetings per month is open to the public. Announcements: There will be a 5k run on 9/13/15 at 8:45 a.m., and all proceeds for this race will go to the IYB. The event is the Ithaca 5&10 and you can register online or on Facebook. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Liz. They are hoping next year to hold the home front here at the IYB and use the trail to run so that less volunteers will be needed. There is a free concert on 9/19 at the Stewart Park Large Pavilion from 4-6:00p.m. The Jeff Love Band and the IYB’s Joe Gibson’s band will be playing. This is for the 2015 Community Mentor Challenge. Staff and Program Updates: There was a request from the Board to give a update of summer programming numbers. RSS did their normal adult programs and the youth programs increased, for camp inclusion. RSS also does the Iroquois Program which is an all-day programming with overnights. Recreation had both full day camps, CIT Program, a variety of lessons, pottery and sailing lessons. The capacity for the full day summer camps were: 130 at Stewart Park Day Camp and 85 Cass Park Day Camp. PSMP did a full summer program as well as a trip. Outing did week long survival program and a 1 week adventure program as well as a 4-day camping trip. BBBS did girls week out and a boys week out with their kids, summer is slower for this program as most mentors are college students who are not here during the summer months. Marsha held an ice cream social at the large pavilion and her program kids made ice cream pottery bowls and asked for $10 and you got to keep the bowl and had it filled with ice cream. Beverly Stokes is the new YES Youth Program Coordinator and this will open a position within the YES program for a youth leader.
