Talyse introduced William “Bill” Martin to the board, and members then introduced themselves.
Talyse had met with Bill prior to meeting and Bill passed around a short introduction in writing
for members. Jody will forward the applications to apply for the Board to Bill. Bill is willing to
volunteer and help in any way.
Review and approval of Minutes:
The Minutes from June 10, 2014 were tabled for approval at the next meeting, as there was not a
quorum.
Eric met with both Joe Gibson and Brittanie Earle of the One-To-One/BBBS program. He gave
a brief overview of the monitoring/meeting. Currently the program has 50 matches, but can go
up to as many as 120. Summer is their quieter time, but still busy doing summer programming
with the children currently on the waiting list. Brittanie does more of the hands on work in the
program and Joe does a lot of the office/paperwork that his required. There are challenges that
they are currently facing, including loss of “in” school supports and decreases in resources and a
lot of paperwork, filing, etc., that takes Joe away from families. They are looking at improving
their Saturday programming, decreasing the number of “manuals” for the program and hoping to
get volunteers to attend more of the workshops that are put together. The National BBBS are
introducing new software updates and they are hoping to get more male volunteers through
Cornell University connection. They are always looking for more reliable fundraising strategies.
Eric will email the monitoring documents to Jody to have on file.
Talyse shadowed the Paul Schreurs Memorial Program on 7/21, this is the last week of summer
programming. There will be a BBQ fundraiser on Saturday, 7/26 at Northside Community
Center. The group was going to Binghamton to meet with a beauty salon owner and this meeting
was cancelled at the last minute. Eloise had a back up plan and they went to Cass Park and made
sugar scrub and gave beauty tips, the kids loved it! There was approximately 7 kids for this and
then they went on a scavenger hunt in the children’s garden and then Eloise got lunch prepared
for the kids and then they did a motivational speech regarding ABC’s of Life, and the kids
watched video and discussed this. They then went to swimming at Treman Park. Talyse was
amazed at how quickly Eloise was able to re plan the entire program at the last minute and that
this particular day she was the only staff person for 7 kids. Talyse will schedule a monitoring
session with Eloise, as this program is one of the two programs that have to be monitored.
Announcements:
Jim D’Alterio came in to follow up on the discussion regarding the Ithaca League of Women
Rollers and the sale of alcohol at their bouts. The League did email answers to some of the
questions the board had asked. The group was hoping for approval in 2014. A discussion of
pros and cons continued, but the Advisory Board was not able to make a decision at this meeting.
They would like to discuss it further and the next meeting.
Staff and Program Updates:
Liz advised that everyone at the IYB are busy with summer programming and summer is in full
swing currently. Staff are busy putting together budgets and last week Liz, Karen, Allen, Jim
and Joan Groome met with Executive Committee to review the proposed budget. Liz passed
around the summary sheets for everyone to look at; the Mayor has asked for a -1% decrease,
which equals a -3.5% with staff salary increases. Liz will be putting together a memo to go with
the budget and she will email the board a copy of this memo when it is sent. In October she will
meet with the Mayor, Chief of Staff and Controller to review the proposed budget with them and
answer any questions, etc. There is a proposal for the IYB to do bike rentals for the waterfront
trail as another source of revenue and Marty Schreiber will be working on this and has been
researching this and will be submitting a grant in September for funds. There are some capital
projects that were submitted, mostly for Cass Park.
Talyse updated the board regarding the hiring process for the IYB Director, and advised that she,
Eric and Augusta had a meeting with Schelly from HR, Marcia Fort from GIAC, the Mayor, J.R.
Claireborne, Stephen Smith, and George McGonigal and Dr. Brown, who is the expert in the
field and currently they are reviewing applications for the position. They anticipate 2 days of
interviews for the candidates that have applied and the committee seems to be working very well.
George McGonigal was not present for an update on Common Council.
Dave Warden stated the Board of Public Works discussed the Stewart Park Large Pavilion and
the restroom repairs that will need to be done. There was some discussion of the food trucks and
the status of those.
Kenneth McLaurin from Southside Community Center was not at the meeting; therefore there
was no report from Southside.
Augusta was not at meeting for an update regarding Friends of the IYB, but Talyse advised that
they are trying to put together the online auction for September. More information will be
coming regarding the auction shortly.
