HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-YB-2014-06-10 June 10, 2014 Meeting Minutes Attendance: George McGonigal, Eric Nichols, Talyse LaDora Hampton, Dave Warden, Caitlin Moss, William Murphy and Lizzy Rayle Excused: Augusta Christensen Absent: Dipayan Ghosh, Shannon Terry and Kenneth McLaurin Staff: Liz Vance, Eloise Barrett and Jody Hallett-Harris --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meeting called to order at 6:04 p.m. by Talyse LaDora Hampton Review and approval of Minutes: The Minutes from May 13, 2014 were approved unanimously –Bill Murphy made the motion and Lizzy Rayle 2nd the motion. Eloise Barrett, the Coordinator of the Paul Schreurs Memorial Program gave a detailed description of the PSMP. The PSMP provides academic and financial assistance to students. Currently there are 16 students in college and 3 students that are graduating this month. They start with students in grade 6 and are referred by “caring adults” to the program. They are referred to the program, then must complete an application, there is an interview conducted and then the intake procress is reviewed. There are currently after school programs (homework club has approximately 15-20 students attending), Let’s Get Ready Program (SAT prep program, which met two times a week for 3 hours each), Get On Track Program (new program to help kids be successful in school) and recently there was a parenting workshop (15 parents attended program, 5 basic skills taught) that was offered. Eloise shared two success stories from students of the program. In 2013 the program had a 93% graduation rate. They will be doing a summer trip in August to Boston to visit 4 colleges (including Harvard and Tufts), Freedom Trail and Inkwell. This year the parents were asked to contribute $50 toward the costs of meals for the trip. The Board agreed that the monitoring of the program should be completed by next month’s meeting. Talyse has volunteered to contact Eloise to make these arrangements. Eric was unable to shadow the BBBS program but will have this completed by next month’s meeting to give a report. Bill shadowed the Youth Council program two times (5/19/14 and 6/3/14). Bill sat in on a presentation which was promoted by Youth Council (part of the Youth Leadership Training Series) and was given by Mike Smith, of the YES Program which was on how to connect for a job, and included how to dress for interview; attitude; how to shake hands and attitude while interviewing. Bill stated this was a wonderful presentation but there were only 5 kids that attended the presentation. Bill also attend a Youth Council Meeting on 6/3 and was extremely impressed on how the students are eager and well organized and there was a discussion regarding the problems at Ithaca High School and how to resolve those problems. Board members attended the graduation dinner on Monday, 6/9 at Hotel Ithaca, there were 15 graduates this year and the brochure from the graduation was passed around. Announcements: Liz asked that the Board Members review, prior to the meeting, the County Funding Proposals for the YES Program, BBBS Program and RSS Program. Eric Nichols made the Motion to approve all three of the proposals and Bill Murphy 2nd the motion, all members in favor. The Ithaca League of Women Rollers had forwarded an invitation to their 6/7 game, but because of the late notice (6/5), members were unable to attend the 6/7 game. The Board asked Jody to email them and extend gratitude for the invitation and requested information for the next scheduled game as the board is very interested in attending. Jody will email them. Staff and Program Updates: Caitlin discussed the Relay for Life event as she had received an email from them and the event is currently scheduled for 7/12 and 7/13. They are looking for volunteers for the event and thought maybe one of the programs could use this as their service project. They are always looking for volunteers throughout the year as well. Caitlin will get more information regarding the volunteering. There will be a meeting for the committee for hiring of IYB Director on Thursday, 6/12 from 9- 12 at City Hall. Eric, Talyse and Augusta will be attending this meeting as well as Schelly from HR, Marcia Fort from Giac, the Mayor, J.R. Claireborn, Stephen Smith, and George McGonigal and Dr. Brown, who is the expert in the field. George McGonigal stated the Common Council discussed the budget guidelines coming out soon and that there will be some serious reductions for 2015. Liz talked about the Town of Ithaca’s reduction of contributions (50% 2015 and 100% for 2016) Dave Warden stated the Board of Public Works discussed the upcoming budget cuts and also the Stewart Park Large Pavilion and the restroom repairs that will need to be done, as they are currently closed off. Augusta from Friends of the IYB was excused from the meeting; therefore there was no report from Friends. Kenneth McLaurin from Southside Community Center was not at the meeting; therefore there was no report from Southside. Bill Murphy asked that we add Announcements/Concerns back to the Agenda. Lizzy stated that she got a job through the YES Program as an assistant to the RSS Inclusion Assistant for Stewart Park Day Camp. Talyse announced that the Aces Group, who is a young professional group will be hosting an event at the Hangar Theatre on 6/19 for the play Red and discount tickets are available for $25.00. If anyone is interested or has any questions, please let her know. Talyse and Caitlin are on a softball team for Diane’s Downtown Automotive. The meeting dates for July were reviewed with members as the budget season begins. The Executive Committee will be meeting on 7/14 from 4-6 in the 2nd Floor Conference room to get a detailed explanation of the program’s proposed budget. Eric, Talyse and Bill will be attending the meeting, Lizzy will try to attend the meeting also. Jody will send out reminders for the meetings.
