Natural Areas Commission meeting minutes. 5:30 pm Tuesday, June 4 2013
Third Floor Conference Room
City Hall, Ithaca, NY
Member Present: Joe McMahon (minutes)
Guests: Roxy Johnston, Erik Whitney, Robbie Sanders, Ashley Miller
This being the first time that the meeting has met on the first Tuesday instead of
the second Monday, confusion created by the change kept other members from
attending. Erik was still willing to present information about the water plant for
those present.
Erik gave an update in regards to the beginning of the rebuild of the water filtration
plant. He began by explaining how the settling ponds on Giles St. will be replaced by
a tank that will compress the sediments out of the water. The work has begun and
the path around the west side of the area to the South Hill Rec Way has been blocked
but contractors are aware that pedestrians are to be permitted to pass through.
The area around the fox den was left intact. Joe suggested the port‐a‐john be placed
somewhere off the trail to reduce the chance of vandals tipping it over.
The water tank on West Hill, which is not in a natural area, will be replaced before
the plant is rebuilt next summer.
At the 60’ dam the access road will be re‐routed first which will require the
removal of some of the trees planted after the dam was built and grading of the
slope will be next. The water intake tower will be rebuilt with work beginning in
August. Potassium Manganite will be added at the intake to the raw water line.
The contract to dredge the reservoir will go out July 2013 for bids, and the contract
for rebuilding the water plant will go out for bids September 2013.
It is required that the main water line be accessible with small equipment so an 8’
wide path will be made along the route next summer.
A meter building is necessary on the slope along Giles St. between the water plant
and the creek. This will be built this summer. The plant itself will be done in phases
and at certain times the city will be supplied with water from Cornell and Bolton
Point.
The next contractor meeting will be June 6 at 9:30 am at the Water Plant and will
take place every other Thursday at that time. Members of the NAC are welcome to
facilitate two‐way communication.
