Hallett-Harris and Kim Olsen Guest: Barnaby Knoll --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meeting called to order at 6:05 p.m. by Eric Nichols Roll call and introduction of guest, Barnaby Knoll, as well as board member and staff introductions Kim Olsen, Coordinator of the Outing Program gave a short overview of the Outing Program. The Outing Program is an outdoor program for youth, ages 5-19, she has to part to her program one is contractual program and fee based programs. They do many different things, including: canoeing, zip lining, climbing both indoors and outdoors, canoe trips, etc. She also has been working with the Safe Routes 2 School program and to date, they have given away over 400+ bike helmets. Currently she is looking for a grant to be able to give more helmets away to youth. Outing partners with Cornell Outdoor Adventure and they borrow equipment and use their rock wall and the also use other. She is accepting winter clothing for her students, warm hats, gloves and jackets are always welcome. The ongoing challenge she faces each year is money to replace the equipment. This year the Friends were able to give money for her to buy new sleeping bags, which were in great need of replacement. Kim does all of the canoe repairs herself and would love to have a full time staff member as she currently has three part-time seasons staff members. Board members were given the opportunity to ask questions. The Minutes from October 11, 2016 were all voted on and approved unanimously. There were several updates from Liz: The second interviews were done for the Administrative Assistant position and a decision should be made soon with regard to who will be offered the position. PROS Consulting recently held two days of focus groups and advisory board members as well as Friends of IYB were given a time slot to talk with them as well as staff of the IYB, Rec and Cass were all able to meet with them. The Winter/Spring I-playbook will be coming out at the end of November, early December. Recently 5 IYB staff members including Liz attended workshops and presented at the NYS Bar Association in Lake Placid. Supervisor and Coordinators were recently in a full day of training on 11/1 to continue working with Jeff Berkowitz and focusing on think creatively. CDP recently did the Cancer Resource Center Walk and will be working with Blanket December which will be sewing blankets. FOIYB Chair Jeff Love will be sharing information and information with us monthly to have updates monthly. The Cass Park Extravaganza was held on 11/5 and raised approximately $6000 for the enclosure of the rink. Beverly Stokes the Coordinator of the Youth Employment Services (YES) gave an overview of her program to the board. She stated that the YES programs works with kids from ages 14-20, from work readiness, career preparation and employment positions. In 2016 they worked with 157 teens, who worked over 18,000 hours and earned $164,000. Teens were limited on number of hours they could work, 120 hours total and could work 20 hours. YES will be taking over the joint youth commissions and will be first time working with Village of Lansing, Danby and Enfield and the first time being able to offer teens from these areas jobs. The newest unsubsidized program “YES Connect” will be structure and clarity for teens after they get a job and will give them action plan and to complete a target. They have been going to Ithaca HS, BOCES, New Roots and LACS during lunch. They are on Facebook and Instagram and keep these sites updated regularly. Currently YES has 60 work sites they partner with and covers from counselors at GIAC, SS, SPDC and CPDC, Primitive Pursuits and 4-H, Youth Farm, Children’s Garden, Ithaca College and Cornell, etc. If you know of anyone or anyplace that would be willing to work with YES and know of any jobs, please call Bev. Nominations of 2017 Chair/Co-Chairs were as follows: Jason nominated Eric as Co-Chair Eric nominated Talyse as Co-Chair Eric nominated Jason as Co-Chair Votes will take place at next month’s meeting. Jason will shadow YES program and Eric will shadow Outing program and report at next month’s meeting. Dave Warden gave an update from the Board of Public Works - Dave Warden stated that he had nothing to report. Friends of the IYB: Cass Park Extravaganza was on November 5th and Jeff will provide monthly info to the meeting and Liz will provide them with info from us. George McGonigal gave an update from Common Council that the Mayor has passed the 2017 Budget Meeting Adjourned: 7:48 p.m. Next Meeting: December 13, 2016 at 6:00 p.m., Green Room
