introduced and he is the Director of Business Development of PSP Unlimited and he is interested in joining the
Board as an at-large member. He will send the application to Jody prior to next month's meeting. It was advised
that Kirtrina Baxter, the liaison from SouthSide will be moving and there is a new liaison from the Board of Public
Works,Mark Darling. Jeff Love, the current Chair of the Friends of the IYB will be presenting at next month's
meeting.
Review and approval of Minutes:
Shannon is on a work trip so Chris,as Vice-Chair,agreed to Chair the meeting.
The minutes from the April meeting were approved unanimously-Bill moved and September seconded the motion.
Recreation Support Services Presentation-Program Coordinator,Joanie Groome, met with the board to give an
program update. She handed out program brochures and funding overview. She also gave a verbal overview of the
program, the current community need and other obstacles/resources for the program.
Presentation highlights:
-staff retention is high(good because learning curve for program is high);usually 1 staff person every few
years
-common comment-a parent loves the Youth Bureau because they know their kid is safe(especially
emotionally,psychologically)
-serves all Tompkins County;provide transportation but ask group homes and families to help with
transportation;hard decision that only provide transportation to kids only within the city limits(to ensure
time is spent on programming not just driving around)
-alternatives: no other organized recreation program except Community Access Providers and once a week
after school program from Rackers;adults have Special Olympics and Dayhab providers
-no cost to family unless there is a program with an entrance fee
-don't ask families to participate in programs because this program provides time for caregivers and other
siblings and participants value the independence;some contribute financially
-staff does a great job working with other rec staff to help their participants for general recreation
programs-camp,tae Kwan doe,soccer,theater,etc

-one problem is that RSS is a known quantity and some people just rely on them and don't do their own
thing-it would be great to if every day camp had inclusion option instead of just relying on RSS programs
because RSS can not serve all of the need
Joanie's presentation brought up the issue of funding and the group discussed the need for help capitalizing on grant
possibilities. George and Eddie both suggested that the City might consider looking for a grant writer or
development staff person to work for the City as a whole. Youth Council will present at the June meeting.
Follow-up on George's suggestion to naming a sport program for Chris Bordoni. The IYB was not able to confirm
that he played IYB Soccer. Also talked to his wife's mom and she said that the family was more focused on the
Sempre Fi folks.Naming an entire program after someone is not very possible-ceremonies,commemorative game
balls,etc is often easier.
Directors Report-Everyone should make sure they are on the electronic news mailing list. The Happenings comes
out monthly and gives an overview of upcoming events. The Quarterly is emailed out four times a year and is a
more traditional newsletter.
FIYB online auction-The Friends of the Ithaca Youth Bureau is holding an online auction later this month. It will
last for two weeks and the group hopes to raise at least$5,000 for IYB programs. Please spread the word and
consider bidding on an item.
Program Monitoring-Chris passed out a handout of preferred monitoring times for different programs. If board
members have interest in monitoring a specific program they should talk to Chris or Shannon. They will serve as the
clearinghouse.
