SIX MILE CREEK GORGE COMMITTEE
Minutes of the August 12 , 1991 meeting .
Present : Jill Tripp, John Johnson , Beth Mulholland , Jim Lister.
This meeting was chaired by John Johnson . An announcement was
made that John Wertis and Munna Rubaii (first Gorge Ranger) wil
join the Committee , and Dan Ottis will be invited to join .
Ranger Jim Lister presented a report of the kind and number of
Gorge violations on a daily basis at three locations : 60 ' dam ,
30 ' dam, and Van Natta ' s Pond . Swimming and trespassing at
the 60 ' dam were the main problems . He suggested we do consider-
ably more posting . Another suggestion was to clear a path from
Route 79 to Potter ' s Falls to avoid the dam area ' ( See below)
John Johnson thanked Jim for his good work this summer; we were
pleased that he will apply for next summer ' s job . Munna will be
asked if she could take over the work when Jim finishes on
August 24th .
The Committee Constitution and By-laws are completed and adopted
and will be taken to Charles Guttman for review , then on to the
appropriate Committees .
Access to the Gorge from Route 79 at the forbidden service road
to the 60 ' dam was discussed , it was noted that this route was
not listed as an access in "Preservation and People" . It was
decided to continue this ban .
Another access point was discussed : the idea of Circle Greenway
continuing out the Upper Path as far as the slide meadow then
out to Route 79 via the service road thru Commonlands exiting
rand entering; by a small existing path from Penny Lane to the
highway which was the former entrance to the service road . Beth

i
Six Mile Creek Gorge Committee , Minutes of August 12 , 1991 meeting p.2,
will inquire if this path is still a City right-of-way . This route
would be preferable to the Town ' s suggested path at Winner ' s Cicte
and would provide a more dramatic way to reach the old Lehigh
Valley Railroad Roadbed at Honness Lane .
A budget was discussed and ideas suggested included funds for signage
planting and structures . John will look into the matter of having
both a Six Mile Creek Gorge Committee and a Circle Greenway line in
the D. P.W. budget .
The next meeting of this Committee will be Monday , September 9t hat
5 o ' clock in the 3rd floor conference room.

SIX MILE CREEK GORGE COMMITTEE
Minutes of the September 9th , 1991 meeting .
Present : Jill Tripp , John Johnson , Charles Baker , Beth
Mulholland „ John Wertis .
The meeting was called together by Chair Johnson , and the
previous meeting ' s minutes accepted .
John reported that•the Constitution and By-laws are now with
City Attorney Charles Guttman for his comment .
Chuck Baker clarified his position on the proposed trail from
the 60 ' dam service road to Potter ' s Falls , this path would
avoidthe immediate dam area ; he will explore a route .
Circle Greenwav presented it ' s idea of a new outlet from the
Gorge by way of the 30 ' dam service road to Penny Lane , then
across a field to Route 79 and Tower View Road , this field was
formerly the entrance to the service road (befor Commonland
development ) and may still be a City easement . Beth reported
that Tom West will find out its present status .
A discussion of budget needs disclosed the unclear "SixuMile
Park" line on the DPW budget . It was decided that Jill will
call this ambiguity to the attention of the Board of Public
works and will suggest that there be three lines on the DPW
budget : SIX Mile Creek Gorge Committee , Circle Greenway , and
The Parks Commission . This Committee decided to request a
budget of $400 for signage , mapping , and mailing .
Beth announced that Circle Greenwajwill hold a FALL COLOR DAY
in the Gorge on Sunday , October 6th . The program will include
a geology walk with John Chiment ; a walk showing how the Gorge
wildlife prepares for an Ithaca winter , with Robert Dirig ; and
a wildflower sees-gathering walk with Beth, and Bob Wesley .
No new word has been heard about the Upper Path reconstruction .

Six Mile Creek Gorge Committe Minutes , September 9 , 1991 . Page 2
It was noted that trail markings along the Wildflower Walk are
fading . Circle Greenway will re-do them. It was suggested that
small maps of the Gorge be made available for visitors . This might
mean litter. A new map will be put on the bulletin board .
Ranger Lister ' s complete "Violations" report was accepted . It was
however , noted that we would like a lot more information about Gorge
usage , not just negatives . We will consider the possibility of a
survey of all Gorge activities next spring .
Next meeting will be held at Van Natta ; s Pond parking lot on Monday ,
October 14th at 4 : 30.
