CITY OF ITHACA
108 EAST GREEN STREET
ITHACA, NEW YORK 14850
OFFICE OF TELEPHONE: 272-1713
MAYOR CODE 607
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 25, 1990
Mayor Benjamin Nichols today announced the appointment of the
members of the Interim Parks Commission which was approved by Common
Council at its meeting of January 3, 1990.
The Interim Parks commission is a brand new board for the City of
Ithaca. The need for such a commission was clearly established during
the Stewart Park Plan hearings of 1987, from which objectives emerged
called The Stewart Park Preservation Goals and Guidelines.
The Chair of the Commission is Victoria Romanoff (273-5796) .
As was evident from the numerous applications received by the City,
many citizens care deeply about their parks, open spaces, waterways,
bike paths and other natural and scenic settings.
Among the appointed members are ecologists, preservationists, a
limnologist, representatives from the Green Party, recreation specialists,
people who use parks in wheelchairs, liaisons from D.P.W. and B.P.W.
and also the public at large, including parents.
The Interim Commission has been asked to devise a permanent review
body which will address itself to the needs of existing parks as well as
help plan new parks and open spaces, which are critically needed in an
ever growing city! In the meantime the Interim Parks Commission will
advise the Board of Public Works on issues affecting the City parks.
