Staff and Committee Reports
1) Director's Report
-Youth Bureau/GIAC Staff Workshop was held in December. Great
opportunity for staff to get to know each other better, find out about programming
and explore various topics of mutual interest and opportunities for additional
coordination.
-Academic Support meetings with staff from Youth Development and GIAC
who are involved with Academic Support programming have been ongoing and
very worthwhile. Academic support continues to be a high priority.
2) Recreation
-Bantam basketball has approximately 128 participants. There are 60 boys in
grades 3,4 and 5 meeting from 1-3 PM at Ithaca High School, a new section of 25
middle school boys meeting at the same time at Boynton, and 33 girls from 3-5 PM at
IHS. The girls program had a special Sunday clinic with the Cornell Women's
basketball team, arranged by our girls' program coordinator Tim Rooney. Mac
Knight is back as coordinator of the boys' program.
-Family Swim has had excellent publicity which has brought about 30
participants each Saturday afternoon at IHS pool.
-Girls Programming - The IYB received recognition, along with Marcia and
Robb Cutting, for initiating a new girls Lacrosse program last year. We also expect to
add a girls outdoor adventure camp for middle schoolers this summer. This is part
of our ongoing efforts to add more programs for girls, to balance the current
participation ratio of about two thirds boys, one third girls.
- Tot Spot has been very successful and as a result may be offered every
Saturday morning instead of every other Saturday. Tot Spot was the recipient of a
$1,000.00 grant from the Service League, to be used for much needed equipment.
Thank you, Service League ! Alice responded to questions about attendance patterns
and sign -in procedures.
-IHS renovations may displace Sports Camp this summer. Alice has been in
touch with Bill Bryant from the Ithaca School District on this. Sally offered to check
on the time line/work plan and report back.
-Youth Network has been sponsoring a drop-in center at the Unitarian
Church. There is interest in a downtown teen center and the group has been in
touch with CRESP (Center for Religion, Ethics and Social Policy) about possible
sponsorship. The teens have also been working on a new mural at the Youth
Bureau, with a $300 grant from the County Youth Bureau.
-We're working on helping with publicity for IHS extra curricular
on the time line/work plan and report back.
- Proposal regarding Club Ithaca at Ides will be reviewed by the Recreation
Committee.
-Alice announced a proposal for a sewing camp. Bill offered to teach a class on
sewing machine repair, if the camp takes place and if the campers are interested.
-There was quite a bit of discussion about the Summer Days Brochure and the
forms for sign-ups for summer programs. We'll need to print more copies this year
due to expanded participation as a result of the recreation partnership. There were
suggestions as to how to lower printing costs without compromising the quality of
the brochure. The possibility of selling advertisements in the brochure was also
discussed.
3. Youth Development
-Board members had a chance to see a video on two of last summer's Youth
Conservation Corps projects: construction of a play structure at Mill Dam Park in
Freeville and construction of a pavilion at the Coddington Road Community
Center.
-Allen distributed some material relating to the formation of a task force that
will be making recommendations to the City and County about Youth Development
programming and funding. Cathy and Joan have volunteered to serve as the IYB
Board representatives on this task force. Thanks to Cathy and Joan !
Board Comments/Issues
-Bill reported on a magic show that some of the members of the Finger Lakes
Magic Club provided for participants in the One to One Program. Thanks Bill !
The next scheduled Board meeting will be Monday. February 10. 1997 at 7:30 PM.
Meeting adjourned at 9:15 PM.
