HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-CPB-2012-07-26CITY OF ITHACA COMMUNITY POLICE BOARD MEETING July 26, 2012 Present: Co -Chair — Rogers Co -Chair — Kane Commissioner Bush Others Present: Information Management Specialist - Day Excused: Commissioner Hang Alderperson and Liaison to Board - Kerslick Police Chief Vallely Call to Order: Co -Chair Rogers called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. Approval of minutes: Approval of the June 28, 2012 Community Police Board Meeting Minutes - Resolution By Commissioner Kane: Seconded by Commissioner Rogers RESOLVED, That the minutes of the June 28, 2012 Community Police Board Meeting Minutes be approved as published. Carried Unanimously Comments from the Public: Maryann DeGrosso attended the Community Police Board Meeting to observe the meeting. She submitted an application to serve on the CPB, and is waiting to see whether or not she will be appointed. Report from Common Council: No report was provided because Alderperson and Liaison to Board — Kerslick was absent. Report from the Police Department: No report was given because Police Chief Vallely was absent. Report from Staff: The Trac phones previously issued to the Community Police Board Co- Chairs Rogers and Kane were returned to the City. Two new cell phones were distributed to them for communication purposes with complainants. Old Business: Commissioner Rogers requested that the City allow the Community Police Board members keep the badges that were issued to them for identification purposes when conducting an investigation. The Board members present expressed their support for this request as well. July 26, 2012 New Business: Co -Chair Rogers asked Information Specialist Day whether the City Clerks Office could answer phone calls coming in on the Community Police Board phone line or would they go directly to the answering machine. Discussion followed regarding the closing of the CPB Office at GIAC and the support that would be provided by the City Clerk's Office. Discussion followed on the floor regarding new member packets given to new Board members. Ideas were discussed about the Clerks Office handing them out to newly appointed members as they are sworn in or, whether the Commissioners would continue to hand them out as new members are welcomed to the Board. The Community Police Board would like to conduct more outreach to the community when the board is fully staffed (ie. education on what to do if stopped by a police officer). Motion to move into Executive Session to discuss complaint investigations: Reconvene: The board reconvened into regular session, and reported on the following: Two complaints were briefly discussed. Complaint #0312 was carried over. Complaint #0712 was assigned to Co -Chair Rogers. Admourn: On a motion the meeting adjourned at 4:20 pm. Cindie L.
