May, 28`h, 2009; 3:30 PM, Common Council Chambers,
City Hall, 108 E. Green Street, Ithaca, N.Y.
Present: Commissioners Danny Slattery, Jonathan Laskowitz, Bird McGruder,
Chuck Firenze, Deputy Chief John Barber; Staff : Nancy Falconer. Common
Council liaison J. Claiborne and guests Nikki Sayward and Albert Lurchuk.
1.Approval of minutes of April 23, 2009: unanimous approval.
2.Nikki Savward was present to observe procedures before she applies to the
Mayor as a Board member.
3.Common Council Member: Reported on the establishment of the Youth
Council.
4. Police Report:
Deputy Chief Barber reported on issues of the IPD; filling new openings etc
He presented a draft for the hiring of a private security organization instead
of utilizing the Police Department officers. It is a cheaper alternative.
5. Old Business
CPB will move the programs for GIAC in August of 09. Administrative staff
will be located elsewhere.
6. New Business
Two former (just retired) married police officers have expressed a wish to join
the CPB. Discussion followed.
7. Motion to adjourn to Executive Session to discuss progress and findings on
complaints; return to public meeting and adjourn. Moved by Jon Laskowitz,
second by B. McGruder.
Two investigations were discussed, as well as one requests for appeal of denial for a
taxi license:
( a) (Laskowitz) One case will be carried over to allow additional time for
interviews.
(b) It was voted to uphold the Chiefs decision to deny a taxi license to this
person on the basis of a letter from his doctor.
(c) This new complaint was assigned to Chuck Virenze and Dan Slattery.
