Meeting called to order at 6:04 p.m. by Talyse Hampton
Introduction of guest, Kim Olsen who gave a presentation to the board of the Outings Program.
The Minutes from October 13, 2015 had one change to them and with the change, the minutes were voted
on, Jason made the motion and Talyse 2nd the motion and all were in favor. Minutes were approved with
the noted change.
Kim Olsen from the Outings Program gave a presentation with photos of the programs playing on the
screen in the background. The program consists of just her, she is the Coordinator of the program and
does all of the planning and also runs the programs as well. She does have one part-time employee Mark
Holton that does assist with some of the programs. Currently, the program is for children from 5 years
old to high schoolers. The programs consists of and outdoor aspect, a long term program, a fee based
programs (Climbing Program and Outdoor Adventure Program), a short term contractual program with
various IYB departments and currently one with LACS (canoeing program) and a summer program where
they go for several days at a time camping overnight and outdoor activities. Kim also is working with the
Safe Routes to School program which is a federal funded grant that runs through 2017 and collaborates
with Recreation Department, Youth Development Department and the Engineering Department that
teaches biking and walking safely to school in a group, the schools are BJM, Fall Creek and Boynton
Middle School. There is also a new even called walking school bus where they meet and walk/bike along
to the school in a group in the mornings.
The Outings Program collaborates with Cornell Outdoor Education (COE) in which we use their
equipment, staff and their facilities for small fee. In 2014, her program worked with over 200 kids and so
far for this year, because of funding cut, she estimates that the program has had 50 kids so far for 2015.
The Urban Renewal Program was the program that was eliminated because of the funding cut and this
was a great program in which Outings in collaboration with the school had an after school program.
The program has most of its own equipment and a few things are borrowed from COE, and they have 10
canoes, of which 9 are currently in service. Kim does all the repairs and maintenance on these canoes
herself and uses 15-passenger van for transportation of the kids to and from the program. Recently a
Social Services League grant was applied for in hopes that some of the equipment can be replaced this
year. Kim passed around a brochure and flyer for her program and if anyone has any questions, please
feel free to email her or call her kolsen@cityofithaca.org
