Community Police Board Meeting
DATE: August 22, 2002, 3:30 pm
PLACE: City Hall, third floor Common Council meeting room
Present: Commissioners Wigden, Nelson, Laskowitz, Passmore,
McGruder ; Acting Chief Lauren Signer, Deputy Chief David
Barnes, Alderperson Pryor, and staff, Nancy Falconer
Excused: Commissioners Wigden, Rovelstad
1. Executive Session was called first.
2. Approval of Minutes of July 25, 2002
The minutes were amended to show that Commissioner Laskowitz was not present at the July 25
meeting. Then approved unanimously.
3. No one was present from the public.
4. Report by Police Department
Acting Chief Signer reported on the arrest and investigation of two different cases, and the sexual
assault attempt in the residential neighborhood of Tioga and Cascadilla. The safe at GIAC was
unbolted from the floor and stolen last week also. The Acting Chief reported that the IPD is
minus a Lieutenant's position as well as two deputy Chiefs, and three officers' positions are
empty. She is meeting next week with the mayor to discuss whether any of these positions can be
filled in view of the current freeze on hiring.
S.OId Business
a)Commissioner Wigden asked about last month's proposal to write a Journal Opinion piece on
police procedures. Alderperson Pryor said she will follow through on getting background
information so that it will be accurate when written.
b) Commissioner Passmore spoke to Ms Mosley at the Ithaca Journal about regular publicity in
the Journal for CPB. She said that can be arranged.
c) Alderperson Pryor reported that budget meetings will be starting in October.
d) Commissioner Passmore reported that he has checked the IPD for our forms three times in one
week, and found them continually missing from the front display station.
e) Several Commissioners attended Pod's Run for tabling, and reported it went well.
Commissioner Cruder will check out a possible tabling on Sept 15 on the Commons and see if we
can set one up.
0 Commissioner Nelson reported that residents of Titus Towers were complaining that some
police officers were rude to them and might file a complaint.
