HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-CPB-2015-07-22CITY OF ITHACA COMMUNITY POLICE BOARD MINUTES Regular Meeting 3:30 p.m. July 22, 2015 Present: Co-Chairs: Kane, Rogers Commissioners (3) DaGrossa, Wright, Onyejuruwa OTHERS PRESENT: Common Council Liaison – Kerslick Information Management Specialist Day EXCUSED: Commissioner LaPadula Acting Deputy Police Chief Monticello Youth Commissioner: Hause CALL TO ORDER: 3:30 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JUNE 24, 2015 MEETING: By Commissioner Wright: Seconded by Commissioner DaGrossa RESOLVED, That the minutes of the June 24, 2015 Community Police Board meeting be approved as published. Carried Unanimously REPORT FROM COMMON COUNCIL: Common Council Liaison Kerslick reported that the Mayor has sent out his 2016 budget guidelines to Department Heads. Departments are required to submit a 0% budget which includes salary increases by August 1st. Common Council will start their review of the budget in October. REPORT FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT: Acting Deputy Police Chief Monticello sent a notice to the Board stating that he would not be able to attend the meeting but had the following points of interest: 1. The first Ithaca Police Department Open House was a huge success with over 100 members from the community in attendance. 2. The body cameras have arrived. They will be rolled out once the docking stations are wired for the building and training has been conducted, hopefully in September. 3. The Department is currently looking at hiring at least one lateral transfer police officer from another agency and are seeking other qualified applicants. The next police exam is scheduled in November. 4. Tom Condzella was sworn in as a police officer on 6/29/15. He is a lateral transfer with prior law enforcement experience in Tompkins County and downstate. He is currently assigned to a field training officer. It is anticipated that his training will be completed by 9/25/15. 5. National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, 2015. 6. Five Ithaca Police Officers were awarded the Kiwanis Officer of the Month for an incident that occurred in October 2013 where 4 people were stabbed. Two persons were subsequently arrested and convicted. OLD BUSINESS: Commissioner Rogers raised questions regarding the brochure the Board was interested in producing to raise public awareness about their role within the community. Due to the lack of time Board members have to work on a project like this, Council Liaison Kerslick volunteered to contact the City Clerk to see if she had an intern available to develop the brochure. Commissioner Kane questioned if anyone was updating the information in the lobby of the Police Station. She wanted to make sure that the most current Compliment/Complaint forms were available to the public at that location. MOTION TO ENTER INTO EXECUTIVE SESSION TO DISCUSS ACTIVE INVESTIGATIONS: By Commissioner Rogers: Seconded by Commissioner Onyejuruwa RESOLVED, That the Community Police Board enter into Executive Session to discuss active investigations. Carried Unanimously RECONVENE: The Board reconvened into regular session with the following Resolution: RESOLUTION: By Commissioner Rogers: Seconded by Commissioner DaGrossa RESOLVED, That case number 2015-4 is considered closed.
