In attendance: David G., Trevor, David K., Matt, Kent, and two visitors from IHS
Topics of discussion:
- Rt. 89/79 — The Upstate NY Safety Coalition Task Force asked Cornell if they
would be interested in studying the impact of the downstate garbage trucks of Rt.
79/89 on Ithaca and they (CIPA) said yes. The study has begun and will end by
the end of the semester. A report will be made to the Task Force and other
organizations. David G. will be the BPAC representative to the study and
requested any input BPAC members might have on the topic.
- Pedestrian/bicyclist safety — This topic was brought up because of the recent
pedestrian/car collisions. We discussed the options of writing a letter to the editor
and about grant opportunities for safety - related actions (for lights, helmets, etc.).
A few BPAC members indicated that they would look further into what grant
options are available /applicable.
- Sidewalk improvements — The topic of sidewalk improvement prioritization has
recently re- surfaced (specifically, in relation to the sidewalk improvements under
consideration for sections of Giles St.). We listed a number of points that should
be considered when prioritizing sidewalk improvements:
• Where it is easy to build sidewalks
• Concentrations of people
• Link to destinations
• Where people are observed walking
• Filling in gaps
• How it fits into a longer range sidewalk plan
o Around schools
o In lower income areas
o In higher motor vehicle traffic areas
BPAC recruitment — we talked about contacting neighborhood groups and posting
flyers. We also talked about having an earlier meeting time and possibly moving
to Tuesdays.
