HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-YBAB-2013-09-01C:\Users\JHarris\Documents\IYB Advisory Board\2013\IYB Advisory Board Minutes 091013.doc September 10, 2013 Meeting Minutes Attendance: William Murphy, George McGonigal, Eric Nichols, Augusta Christiansen Caitlin Moss, Shannon Terry and Nagiane Lacka Excused: Talyse LaDora Hampton and Dipayan Gosh Absent: Mark Darling, Steve Smith, Staff: Liz Vance, Jody Hallett-Harris and Mike Blakely-Armitage --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meeting called to order at 6:06 p.m. by Liz Vance Review and approval of Minutes: The Minutes from July 23, 2013 were tabled for next month’s meeting. Announcements: Lizzy Rayle was introduced to the Board; she is an 8th grader at LACS and is interested in becoming an at-large member. Shannon Terry was able to attend and advised that she will continue her mayoral appointment through December, her appointment is through 12/2015. There is a possibility that Shannon will apply to be an at large member at the end of her appointment if schedule and time allow. Nomination of temporary Chair and Vice-Chair: Chris Milner has formally resigned from the Board as Vice-Chair and his resignation was forwarded to the Mayor. There was a discussion about a temporary chair and vice-chair assignments. Both George and Shannon offered to help in those roles through the end of December 2013. A motion was made by Bill Murphy that George McGonigal be appointed as temporary Vice Chair until the end of the year and Shannon Terry continue as Chair, and Eric Nichols 2nd the motion and all were in favor. Mike Blakely-Armitage gave a detailed overview of the Recreation Program, including a breakdown of the different programs that run and Liz Vance explained the Recreation Partnership. A copy of the I-Playbook was passed out to each member and the differences in fees were also explained, Recreation Partnership/City Discount/Non-Member. Mike talked about Cass Park Day Camp and well as Stewart Park Day Camp, he advised that both camps hire C:\Users\JHarris\Documents\IYB Advisory Board\2013\IYB Advisory Board Minutes 091013.doc high school students and also partners with the Youth Employment Service for hiring of staff for both camps. They have also established a relationship with TCAT for bus passes. He ran through some of the many programs that is offered including: Swim lessons, golf, tennis, sailing, roller skating, Tae Kwon Do as well as a music program, a pre-competitive swim clinic and many different expressive arts programs. A new program offered this year was Art Bots, in which kids made their own toys and sold them. Mike spoke about the Counselor in Training Program (CIT Program) at Stewart Park Day Camp and how these kids learn to become camp counselors as well as are certified in CPR/First Aid. Liz also talked about the scholarships that are offered for the programs and also spoke about the grant money that DSS offers to eligible families for summer camps. Mike also reviewed all the Fall Programs that are now being offered and advised regarding the process in which volunteers/coaches are hired/trained for the programs. He stated that new this year is the new social media for the Recreation Program, as they are now on Twitter and FaceBook. Mike talked about the current evaluation system and they are reviewing the current system to find a better way of getting feedback from participants/families. LACS Programming Discussion George McGonigal spoke regarding the need for programming for young people on West Hill and the use of LACS. There was a lengthy discussion regarding this and Liz advised that Karen Friedeborn has been working with Jemilla from CCE to support the start up of the 4H program at LACS. She has been looking to Mimi to help run some after school activities at the 4H program. In addition parents/residents at West Village have expressed interest in having parenting classes. Eloise Barrett is will work with families on this. Liz will check in with Karen next week to get more information regarding the 4-H Program and let the Board know. Staff Reports/Updates: Liz advised that the City Administration approved the addition of a Recreation Program Specialist to the IYB roster. The Civil Service Committee will meet on 9/12 to review and hopefully approve the new position. The next step will be a Vacancy Review Committee meeting where they will look at the need the need to fill the position. If they approve we will be able to work with HR to post and begin the recruiting/hiring process. Liz stated that she, Eloise, Nagiane and Mustafa (Coordinator for RIBS) met and spoke about applying for a grant for Gears for Change. The program uses bicycling as a tool to to teach about health and wellness, sustainability and community. 4 – 8 young women will be targeted and South Side and PSMP (YB) will coordinate together. On Monday a panel discussion was held at the Youth Bureau called Using Data to Solve Social Issues. There was a great turn out and Michelle Thompson and Kirby Edmonds spoke and there was much discussion regarding where needs are, building bridges in the community, the poverty within this community and collective impact; using whole community to address a single issue.
