HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-YBAB-2010-09-01 Youth:Resources:Executive Assistant:IYB Advisory Board:IYB Advisory Board Minutes Sept 13 2010.doc September 13, 2010 Meeting Minutes Attendance: Chris Milner, William Murphy, Eddie Rooker, Kirtrina Baxter, Annabel Fowler, Jen Mainville and Jeri Gallucci Staff: Allen Green, Jen Handy and Jody Hallett-Harris. Absent: Joan Spielholz Guests: Caroline Lees, Ann Ainslie, Phylis Joyce Jennie Pogorzala and Joanie Groome --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meeting called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Chris Milner Caroline Lees was introduced; she currently has an application pending with the Mayor for appointment to the Board. Phylis Joyce and Ann Ainslie were guests from the Recreation Support Services (RSS) Program Advisory Board. Joanie Groome was also present, as a guest, she is the RSS Program Coordinator and she introduced Jennie Pogorzala to the board, she is a newly hired RSS Program Leader. Review and approval of Minutes: The Minutes of May 10, 2010, June 14, 2010 and July 26, 2010 were approved. Bill made the motion and Eddie 2nd the motion, all were in favor. Officer’s Reports: Common Council – Eddie Rooker - Common Council has approved funding to look into the fixing and/or replacing the Stewart Park Small Pavilion at this time. There was a brief discussion regarding the small pavilion and who takes the revenue and who maintains it. Allen stated that it is DPW who maintains both pavilions and the IYB takes all the reservations and phone calls and we collect the revenue for them. GIAC (Joan Spielholz) – Absent – No Report. Southside Community Center (Kirtrina Baxter) – Absent – Kirtrina advised that there is a new after school program that is free and there is also a hot meal program for students and families, similar to the one that GIAC currently runs. The computer class is doing extremely well and there is a very popular video blog currently being done. She also advised that Congo Street Market was a huge success and Southside is currently working closely with the Paul Schreurs Memorial Program. Staff Reports: Allen stated that the Friends of the IYB just sent out mailings to approximately 2500 people. This is their first fundraising campaign for the IYB. Chris Milner received one in the mail and passed it around for everyone to take a look at. In the Atrium there is a new table with all of the volunteer information on it. There will be a new volunteer application and Edgar Galvis (VISTA) will be putting together a database of volunteers so that tracking volunteers is much easier and no one will fall through the cracks. Unfinished Business: Bylaws & Duties: Sections 5 and 6 were discussed at length and it was decided that no changes be made to Section 5 and in Section 6A the date of 1952 would be taken out. These changes will be presented at next month’s meeting and a vote will be done in November for final approval of these changes. Jen Mainville suggested that this section should be placed right after Section 3 as it should come before duties. Board Recruitment follow-up: Jen Handy announced that she will be attempting to get some recruitment articles in the Danby Area News and she had just attended the Danby Town Meeting prior to arriving. Allen stated that he had spoke to John Raimon at LACS and he seemed very interested, Allen will follow up with this. Jen Mainville talked with Sara at New Roots earlier and she stated that school is starting this week and she will follow up with Sara next week regarding recruitment. Jen also stated that she can email recruitment information to the Home School Network. Jen Handy will contact Lizzy and Cameron again, as they both need to submit a letter of resignation. B.B.B.S. Monitoring – Chris stated that Valerie Weber and Lizzy Noonan-Pomada did not complete the monitoring and Bill Murphy volunteered to do this. Chris will follow up with this. Need to do an email reminder to Board Members regarding the Youth Bureau’s Budget review on October 7, 2010 New Business: Allen handed out “Impact of Proposed 2011 Target Cut on Rural and At Risk Youth”, this goes along with the letter from Nancy Zahler that was sent with the Minutes and Agenda. Allen stated that the budget that was already submitted had the assumption that $10,000 would be there for funding, now with this proposed cut, it has drastic impact on programming, specifically the YES Program. This amounts to approximately 23 teenagers not being able to be employed next summer. Suki will be setting up a table in the atrium with fact sheets, a list of legislators and example letters regarding these proposed county cuts. Cornell Class of 2012: Annabel stated that they are doing a fundraiser for the IYB on September 23, 2010 at Dino’s in Collegetown where sunglasses will be sold and all proceeds will be given to the IYB. Annabel stated that their website will have a selection of volunteer opportunities at the IYB. Jen Handy and Edgar Galvis will be arranging a meeting with the officers of the 2012 Class and try to get on the same page as far as what the IYB needs and how their class can help us. Annabel will email Jody a list of email addresses so that the Happenings Newsletter can be emailed to them. Jen Handy suggested that maybe we have a volunteer information meeting here at the IYB. Phylis Joyce suggested that we have a Special Olympics here. Board Comments/Issues: Jen Handy stated that the Youth Council is having its Cow Pie Bingo on September 25, 2010 at the Enfield Harvest. There is a $500 prize, and tickets are $5.00 each, if you are interested in buying a ticket please see Jen. BBBS are having a fundraising event, “Roll for Kids Sake” at Cass Park on 9/25/10, this is a roller skating event with the League of Women Rollers. Jen Mainville stated that the LGBT Youth Group will be having meetings and she handed out information cards to board members. Bill Murphy stated the Cayuga Wizards will be performing in Rochester.
