Review and approval of Minutes:
The Minutes from February and May are not yet completed.
College Discovery Program (CDP) gave a very informative presentation was given by Program Coordinator, Linda
Cimakasky-Barr as well as staff members Johara Malcolm and Zobe Zulu who are Mentoring and Academic
Support Specialists. Doug Gould from the Outing Program works occasionally with the program as the PAL Group
Leader. There was a power point presentation giving an overview of the program. CDP was started in 2005 and
collaborates with the Ithaca City School District. Currently they have 6 students graduating this year and their logo
is “Reach for the Stars”. CDP has their own Advisory Board that helps fundraise and recruits volunteers. Their
program usually consists with an even number of urban/rural, racial and boy/girl ratios. The children start at the
end of the 5th grade and teachers nominate the kids for the program. Both children and parents are interviewed; they
must commit to the program and sign a contract. CDP is constantly thinking of ways to improve the program and
they are involved in all the Ithaca schools. The teachers are very connected with the program and the kids get
support from all levels. Jobe and Johara visit the schools somewhere between three times a week (sometimes daily)
and generally on a need basis. They also provide a homework club and that is a one semester commitment. They
have trips, outing events with the kids to keep them involved and focused and have family dinners 4 times a year
wherein they recognize the students and generally have some speaker for the evening. They need male mentors and
the commitment is one year, 2 hours a week and must be over the age of 18. For more information please visit their
website: www.collegediscoveryprogram.wordpress.com.
Allen spoke briefly regarding the 2013 budget and that the Mayor would like a draft of the 2013 Budget by July 1st
instead of the previous August 1st date. He is asking for a -10% on the personnel line and -1% on the non-personnel
line and this is going to result in cutting of programs and reprioritizing programs generally. They are trying to avoid
layoffs with this 8.4% reduction. Allen reminded everyone of the 2 meeting dates in July for the Executive
Committee and the full Board Meeting and Jody will send out the dates to everyone. There will be no meeting in
August.
Jen stated that the Friends of the IYB Online Auction was a huge success and raised $5,298.25. They have raised
and given approximately $20,000 to the IYB in the past 2 years.

Jen Handy gave a presentation of the Ithaca Youth Council. Jen is the Program Leader and works 21 hours a week.
She gave out handouts that showed what the program does and what it is all about. September Johnson is the
current Chair and Patrick Hollister is the Secretary. Youth Council has been around since the 40’s and has been on
and off again for a number of years. There are currently 14 students from the Ithaca City School District ad they are
nominated and then they apply for a position. Youth Council is an official city committee and is under the City
Chart and presents to Common Council four times a year. Jen did a quick activity wherein she asked the board
members what they would do with a $1,000,000.00, who or what would they give it to. She advised that recently
the Ithaca Youth Council worked with younger kids and asked them “What does the Mayor do?”. She received all
the responses and put them in a book and gave it to the Mayor when he came to the school and answered that
question. Each child was able to have a photo taken with the Mayor. They recently did a Day of Service, National
Kick Butts day (an anti tobacco day), Mentor Days, and are putting together a Legislative process brochure.
Eric Nichol’s applied for both at large membership as well as Marorial Appointment; we will take a vote at next
month’s meeting.
