Joe Gibson, the Coordinator of the One-to-One Big Brother Big Sister Program gave a detailed description of the BBBS program. The BBBS program is a 90% community based program and 10% weekend program and special events. In 2013 the program has served 177 children, ages 6-14. The program is a long term mentoring relationship that is less academic than the other IYB program (PSMP and CDP). There are 4 full-time employees (2 match specialists, with a case load of 50 each) and 1 part-time employee. Joe does the screening and interviews of all new volunteers. There fundraising consists of 2 major events, Roll for Kids Sake and Bowl of Kids Sake, they also have other fundraising events through the Bigs Club at Cornell and Ithaca College. They also do recruiting for volunteers by radio, flyers and through the Bigs Club at the colleges. Currently there are approximately 30 kids on the waiting list, waiting for a match. The wait is usually 3-6 months but sometimes longer, up to a year. They program takes care of the matches that are formed and meets with the families and the mentors monthly. The program also has mentor trainings each year and there are also trainings available on the BBBS National webpage too. Surveys are given to the families and mentors regarding the initial process once they are matched. They also have a final meeting with the families when they are ending the match. There is also a need for male mentors and the minimum standard for time is a one year commitment or 3 semesters for college students and requires 2 hours a week time commitment. The IYB BBBS program is affiliated with the National BBBS of America and they have a standard of practice that the program is following the guidelines they use are good. It is an $8000.00 a year membership fee for the affiliation which gives the program access to forms, database (AIM Account Information Maintenance), flyers, etc. Joe can be reached at jgibson@cityofithaca.org. The Board agreed that the shadowing of the program should be completed by next month’s meeting. Eric Nichols has volunteered to contact Joe to make these arrangements. George shadowed the College Discovery Program at the Dewitt Middle School and Jobe was there as well as 4-5 kids. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, kids seemed to get their work done and the only thing that George was “concerned” about was there was one girl at the homework club that didn’t seem to get any attention while she was there. Jobe did a great job with the other kids and had a great sense of humor and the kids were very comfortable. Bill Murphy provided information regarding the Computer All Stars and Youth Council programs. He has the reports from the programs and also filled out the form that Talyse had put together for the monitoring/shadowing, these were given to Jody to file with the Board information. Bill will give a report of the shadowing of Youth Council at next month’s meeting. It was noted that the assistance Marty had requested at the board meeting last month has been fulfilled he has help with the video!! Announcements: The Committee for hiring of a new Director was moved up on the Agenda and Joe Gibson stayed to discuss this. The IYB staff has met, HR has sent out a survey to the staff and the staff would like to help the board in any way they can in the process of searching for a new director. Talyse and Eric are on the Committee and they would like Augusta to be the third for the committee. Eric has been in contact with the Mayor. There were some questions regarding the survey and would they have access to the results of the survey and what is the definition of “expert in the field”? There was discussion of meeting with the staff to share info and see what the staff would like and the board should contact Joe directly for this. Roller Derby bouts at Cass Park were moved up on the Agenda also. Jim D’Alterio joined the group for this discussion. The Ithaca League of Women Rollers would like to sell alcohol at their bouts. There are approximately 400-700, on average, spectators that come to these bouts at Cass Park Rink. The sale would be in a roped off area, they would sell canned beer only, there would be a paid security guard and paid bartender. The suggestion would be to start selling the beer ½ hour before the bout and stop selling at the end of ½ time. The board was very concerned about the sale of alcohol during the junior rollers and it was agreed that there should be no selling of alcohol while the juniors are doing their bouts. They would have to provide the license from the ABC Board, they would have to have liability insurance and would follow the same guidelines as other special events requirements. There would be no sales during pool hours and the clean-up is the responsibility of the group. The board would like to know what the liability to the city would be, are there sales of alcohol in other communities, and are they private of municipal facilities? There was also a discussion of a trial period for this if this did get approved, or a possibility of sales for a limited number of bouts, etc. The Board would like to have these questions answered before any further discussions take place. Staff and Program Updates: Liz advised that the IYB has hired a new Recreation Specialist, Ernesto “Tito” Villa and he will be working part time and started on Monday, 5/12. Caitlin discussed the Relay for Life event as she had a discussion with them and they are interested in a partnership with the IYB and would like to set up a meeting with Board to come and have a discussion of their event. The event is scheduled for July 12 & 13th and they also have other smaller events throughout the year. They would like some collaboration with the IYB for youth events during the actual relay. Caitlin will try to see if they can come to the next board meeting and they can give a brief presentation. George McGonigal stated that there is no report from Common Council. Dave Warden stated the Board of Public Works recently approved a banner at Titus Flats and guidelines for banners (sign ordinance) were given and the banners must be for positive community events. Augusta from Friends of the IYB was excused from the meeting; therefore there was no report from Friends. Kenneth McLaurin from Southside Community Center was not at the meeting; therefore there was no report from Southside. Next Meeting: 6/10/14 7:50 ADJOURNMENT
