Joe Gibson the Program Coordinator of the Big Brother Big Sister Program gave a great presentation of the BBBS
Program. The program has 6 staff members. There are three main programs that are run: One-To-One Program,
Ithakids and While you Wait Saturday Program. BBBS serves approximately 200 children a year, between the ages
of 6-14. There are also other community programs such as Cornell Big’s Club, IC Big’s Club and TC3 Big’s Club
(this just recently started). The program does trainings, family events and two major fundraising events, Bowl for
Kids Sake and Roll for Kids Sake. The program’s 2011 fundraising goal is $15,000.00 and approximately $11,000
comes directly from the 2 major fundraising events. 1/3 of all the volunteers come from the BBBS National
Organization and approximately 60-65% are college students. The program promotes long and strong matches, does
regular follow ups and does family surveys to make sure the matches are going well and to makes sure that interests
are being fulfilled and they are try to promote academic attitude with the children. There is a very thorough
screening process for matches and it takes approximately 9 months to 1 year to make a match and currently there are
75 kids on the waiting list, with 75% being boys.
Two guests were introduced: Allison Lewis, who is a Junior at the Ithaca High School she is in the College
Discovery Program and currently the Vice Chair of Youth Council. Eric Nichols was also introduced; he works at
PSP Unlimited and just moved to the area with this family. Both are very interested in joining the Board.
Chris Milner did shadowing with the Youth Employment Service Program on April 29th at the Ithaca High School,
with Penny and Mike. He stated that the kids seems very comfortable with Penny and Mike and made a suggestion
that maybe a sign be put up on the table to let newer kids know what they are doing there. They are at the school
three days a week from 10:30-1:30, at Boynton and Dewitt on Mondays, and Wednesdays at Lehman and New
Roots. Chris stated that he will be doing a second shadowing and that will be when the kids come for a training on
how to fill out job applications.
