The Computer All Stars program has been ran since 1999, and has been winding down over the past year and has been pretty much reduced to just teaching at the Fingerlakes Reuse Center. He teaches 6 students for approximately 6 weeks during the summer. Students come from the YES Program, Tompkins Workforce and Cooperative Extension. The Fingerlakes Reuse Center is a non-profit organization and people donate items (everything except clothing) to them and they refurbish the items and resell them for a low cost and it is located in the Triphammer Mall. They will be moving to the downtown area, in the old TST Boces Building across from car wash/Pudgies. The ECenter teaches computer technology, internet safety, job readiness and recycling. There are apprenticeships and 4 of the participants have taken a computer oriented job in the local area. They also offer low income qualified families computers for a cost of $45. Marty took over the Youth Council Program after Jen Handy left. He meets once a week, for 1 ½ hours, every Tuesday night with the kids. The ages of the kids are 15-19. They have the Ithaca Is Community Service day coming up on 4/26 and is the 3rd annual event. They start at Stewart Park and go to many areas and clean up, mulch, garden, etc. They recently participated with GIAC and Southside in the Kick Butts Day, Juneteenth event and GIAC Festival. They present to Common Council four times a year. There are four seniors currently in the program and Marty provides a letter of reference for them and helps work on college applications for them. He has a student that was accepted by both Brown and Cornell University, one that was accepted to Virginia Tech and Amherst. Marty used a variety of means to get students into this program, and needs to have 14 students for the program, he uses the Human Services Listserve, PTA, city users, HIS and LACS for recruiting. He faces some challenges with this program, in that he needs some help with the video production/editing and creative ideas/help with putting together brochures. Best Buy gave them high tech video equipment and he needs someone that knows how to use Final Cut Program and I-Movie to help with this. He is seeking an intern or volunteer to help with these items, Eric Nichols and Talyse both stated they may know some college students that may be interested in helping. The Board agreed that the shadowing of the program should be completed by next month’s meeting. Bill Murphy has volunteered to contact Marty to make these arrangements. Jody will let Marty know that Bill will be contacting him to set this up also. The board voted unanimously that the Monitoring Packet Talyse put together will be utilized and that the last 5 pages of this packet will be kept on file to use as a future reference. George will also present at next month’s meeting on the College Discovery Program. He shadowed a tutoring program at the school already. Announcements: Eric gave an update regarding the Jump on Board Event that was held on March 25th. There were 7 people that were interested in the Board and Eric has reached out to them and will invite them to come to next month’s meeting. There were some folks that were interested in just volunteering generally with the Youth Bureau. Talyse announced that the Hangar Aces (young professionals groups) are holding an event on 4/25 from 8-12 and handed out flyers to board members. Bill announced that there is a magician’s show on 6/5. Staff and Program Updates: Liz advised that the YB is gearing up for the summer/fall brochure to come out on 4/21 and registration will begin on 4/28. The College Discovery Program is having a Wine Tasting fundraiser on 4/25 at Corks and More, and board members wanted more info on this event. Jody will email the information to them tomorrow. Liz discussed the recent article that was in the Ithaca Journal regarding the possible cut in funding by the Town of Ithaca. This cut would be approximately 50% for 2015 and 100% cut for 2016. Allen and Liz have met with Eric Levine to discuss this and will be meeting with the Mayor on Monday with numbers to go over the effect this will have on the YB. The large pavilion restrooms have been closed because of the flooring. The flooring will be replaced in both restrooms and the April and May renters have been notified that the restrooms are being worked on and that are closed. George McGonigal stated that the Common Council is looking at getting the budget toward the end of the summer and that there have been some unforeseen expenditures that will affect the 2015 budget. Dave Warden stated the Board of Public Works had no issues that related to the IYB. George stated that he talked with Marcia Fort and Ray Benjamin possible apprenticeships for kids possibly in the Public Works area (sidewalks) that were discussed at last month’s meeting.
