The Minutes from February 11, 2014 were approved unanimously –Eric Nichols made the

Linda Cimaksky-Barr, the Coordinator of the College Discovery Program gave a detailed slide
show presentation of her program. The CDP Program was started in 2005 by Karen Friedeborn.
The program is a long-term mentoring and academic support program for kids from 5th grade all
the way through 1st year of college. She has two staff members, Johara Malcolm and Jobe Zulu.
The program is always in need of mentors and tutors. The mentors must commit to 2 hours a
week for one year and tutors must commit to one semester. The staff are in the schools three
times a week to see the kids and help with homework etc. They have four family dinners a year
and the parents commit to attend these dinners at the beginning of the program, when their
children are accepted. The CDP Program has an Advisory Board that meets a couple times a
year and has approximately 13 members and they do one fundraiser a year for the program. The
CDP Advisory Board is also seeking Board Members, if you know of anyone please let Linda
know. You can find out more information about the program by visiting their website:
www.collegediscoverprogramithaca.com or by going to their Facebook page. The CDP Program
is having a fundraiser this Friday, March 14th at Moe’s, it’s a $10 all you can eat, and $7 of the
money will go directly to CDP.
The Board agreed that the shadowing of the program should be completed by next month’s
meeting. George McGonigal has volunteered to contact Linda to make these arrangements.
Jody will let Linda know that George will be contacting her to set this up also.

CDP.
Staff and Program Updates:
Liz advised that Will Glennon has been hired to fill the Recreation Program Coordinator and will
be starting on Monday, March 17th. They have not filled the second position yet. The BBBS
Bowl for Kids Sake was a huge success and raised approximately $20,000.00!! Liz stated that
Request for Proposals are still out for the new recreation software. The Marathon Miles kick off
started this past Sunday and this year, the entire Northeast Elementary School will participating.
The principal has challenged the kids and their families to do a total of 10,000 miles and if they
do he will run the festival mile in a pink tutu!! Fall Creek and BJM schools are also participating
in this also. Liz checked in with Karen regarding the Cooperative Extension mentoring
program and stated that there is not an overflow of mentors that could utilize and this is not a
duplication of services; the benefit is that there are so many kids to serve and not enough
mentoring and this is done specifically inside of the school.
George McGonigal stated that the Common Council meeting was held last week and they are
close to doing a job search for Director of the IYB. There will be three Common Council
Members on the committee, Stephen Smith, George McGonigal and J.R. Clairborne; HR is
updating the job description too.
Dave Warden stated the Board of Public Works met on Monday and they discussed snow
removal in the City, specifically curb snow removal, he asked for information on the YES
Program and we gave him Suki’s name to be the point of contact regarding this. There was some
talk about apprenticeships for kids possibly in the Public Works area; Dave Warden will take this
suggestion back to the Board. There was some discussion of consolidations of Boards of GIAC,
Southside and IYB and this has been brought up before and some discussions were held with
Senior Staff and Common Council.
Augusta stated that Friends had a Board Retreat in February and they discussed 2014 fundraising
and organization. They will be working more on collaboration with IYB Advisory Board and
working directly with Coordinators/Supervisors of the IYB. They would like to do grant writing
for any program that is planning on applying. At this time, they are postponing the Friends
Auction and maybe August or September. They are working on getting their Website up and
functioning properly. Friends are very interested in the suggestion of a Board Mixer with us.
