Review and approval of Minutes:
The Minutes from the February 14, 2012 were not yet finished and will be reviewed at next month’s meeting.
Jim D’Alterio the Recreation Supervisor of Cass Park came and gave a very informative and detailed overview
presentation of Cass Park. Jim gave a handout showing the breakdown of facilities, when the pool and rink is open
(only closed 2 days a year, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day) and statistic sheets for the rink and pool. Jim
advised that the rink was just closed for skating last week and the pool will be opened for swimming in late June,
November the fields are closed for use, October the rink is opened for skating. Jim advised that the fields are
showing wear as well as the rink and pool. He went over recent repairs and upgrades as well as future
projects/needs of Cass. Allen passed around photos of the addition that has been worked on. The real priority for
needs is the pool filtration system; it is the original filtration system and is approximately 40 years old. This is the
40th birthday of Cass Park. Jim stated that currently they have a staff of 4.5: Yolanda Richardson, Program Leader,
Maintenance persons and himself. Of course there are many seasonal workers during the year. Cass Maintenance
persons do their own mowing and recently got a new lawnmower that was requested, but did not get the Gator or the
Zamboni was requested. The backup Zamboni is a 1972 model and the approximate cost of a new one is $125,000,
so at this point they will continue to repair/maintain the old one. There was some discussion regarding dasher
boards, sponsorship of a new scoreboard and possible funding by larger sponsors.
Allen did a quick update regarding the Skate Park Project which he sent Board Members an email of the press
release. He advised that DPW had done some work to the area as the concrete was uneven; there was standing water
problems and some cracking in the concrete. Since this the users of the park have been raising money to make

major improvements. A 2008 capitol project was approved for $100,000.00 with the understanding that the skate
park would match these funds, which they have. Design work is to start soon and there will be an open house on
March 27th from 7-9:00 p.m. at the Sciencenter and there will be one additional meeting thereafter, Allen can
provide this information if you are interested. The plan is to finish the design work this year and construction to
begin in 2013.
Bill Murphy stated that he had monitored the College Discovery Program this past Friday, March 9th and he passed
around the information that Linda Cimakasky-Barr had given him. Bill advised that Linda is very comfortable with
her program at this point as previously the main area of concern was fundraising, which was difficult to balance the
actual program and fundraise at the same time. CDP works at putting together groups of youth that are at risk,
underrepresented and unprepared for college. The youth start at grade 5 and go through graduation. They currently
have 6 teens graduating this year and one graduated last year, a full year early. Staff and faculty nominate students
for this program. Parents must sign an agreement stating they are committed and Linda’s main concern is getting
more male mentors and needing more space here at the IYB for this program. She currently has a staff of 2.5
(Outing person helps out with team building activities). CDP only does 2 fundraisers: one is a letter campaign and
the other is a wine tasting event, sponsored by the CDP Advisory Board, which has been a huge success for this
program. Bill stated that their current Facebook page is very under-utilized and would like to see that updated and
used.
Jen advised that she, Shannon and Chris attended the Jump on Board Event on 2/23/2012 and it was a great success,
there were a lot of people (150+) and they were quite busy.
Introductions were made to the new Board of Public Works liaison Mark Darling. Mark currently works at Ithaca
College and is on a number of committees/boards.
