Meeting called to order at 5:56 p.m. by Shannon Terry
Review and approval of Minutes:
The Minutes from the December 13, 2011 were approved unanimously – Bill Murphy made the motion and Chris
Milner 2nd the motion.
Suki Tabor the Coordinator for the Youth Employment Service (Y.E.S. Program) came and gave a wonderful
overview presentation of her program. She had us break into two groups and we were given a game to play. This
was used as an example to show all of us how teens present to the their program and what was needed from her staff
in order to try to figure out what would be the best placement, especially if its their first time seeking employment.
We were then given another task of interviewing Board Chair, Shannon Terry, and asking questions that had been
prepared by Suki. This task was used to show us how teens are interviewed to find out what skills they may have,
even if they have never been employed. Y.E.S. uses these worksheets to help match teens with different
employment positions. Y.E.S. is partnered with other organizations to assist with summer employment for teens in
the Ithaca/Tompkins County Area. For 2011, approximately 200 teens were helped by the Y.E.S. Program and Suki
believes with the funding for 2012, it will be approximately the same number of teens. Currently the program is
seeking a Program Assistant, which is a part time roster position with benefits. This was to be full time but with the
budget they had to cut back on the hours. The staff will be having a staff retreat on Friday, January 13, 2012, this
helps with the upcoming summer employment. Suki handed out a sheet showing the 2012 Y.E.S. Programs. They
will be offering workshops for teens to help with different areas of skills, such as resume writing, etc. Currently the
teen unemployment rate is extremely high.
Allen did a quick update regarding the budget/advocacy. There still has been no official word with regard to Youth
Bureau Association Executive Committee Meeting held last month, but verbal reports have been encouraging. The
State Budget comes out any day now and as far as City level there is no new developments. Allen announced that
we have a new Mayor and new Common Council members. It was announced that there will be a good
bye/welcome event at Corks N More on January 20, 2012 to welcome in the new members and say good bye to the
members leaving. Jen will email the announcement that was sent out city-wide.

Bill Murphy stated that he has not yet monitored the PSMP Program as Eloise is still currently out due to personal
matters. He hopes to have this monitoring done, as well as the College Discovery Program by the end of January.
Board recruitment was briefly discussed and Jen would like to get something emailed out on the List Serve for new
members, as we currently have 5 mayoral vacancies. Chris Milner had put together a draft overview of Board
Member Responsibilities and this was passed around and Shannon Terry will start the ball rolling with this. Jody is
to email Shannon a copy of the current Bi Laws for the Board.
Jen announced that the Friends of the IYB are now on Facebook and have a brand new website.
Shannon stated that that Jump on Board Event will be on 2/23/2012 and Chris Milner volunteered to represent the
Board at this event.
The Board discussed having more presentations from the IYB and it was suggested that Cass Park, specifically Jim
D’Alterio come to the next meeting and talk about Cass Park.
Jen announced that Youth Council had the very first official meeting with the new Mayor and it was well received.
The news was there taping the Mayor’s first few days in office, Brian Williams from NBC. Jen also stated that there
was a wonderful article in the Syracuse Post Standard regarding Mayor Myrick.
