Revision of Minimum Qualifications – GIS Map Technician
The Commission reviewed and discussed the impact of the revisions to the minimum
qualifications for GIS Map Technician that they approved last month. The college credit
requirement that was approved was based upon the premise that most GIS college
courses are four credit hour courses. Based on the transcripts that have been provided by
candidates, the vast majority of GIS college courses are actually three credit hour courses.
As a result, candidates who have completed the appropriate coursework are not qualifying
for the position, because they do not meet the college credit hour requirement. After
discussion, Commissioner Thompson made a motion to amend subsections (a) and (b) of
the minimum qualifications for GIS Map Technician by replacing the requirement of
sixteen (16) credit hours of GIS coursework with a requirement of nine (9) credit hours of
GIS coursework. Seconded by Commissioner Abrams. Motion carried 2-0.
