The Committee [AOC] met at Ithaca Town Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007,
at 5 pm.
Present: AOC Members Elizabeth Field (Bauchner), Wayles Browne, Will
Burbank, Shane Seger [chair], Wies van Leuken, studio manager Lauren
Stefanelli.
1. Notes by W. Browne as AOC secretary.
2. Minutes of Jan. 9 meeting: accepted with small amendments.
3. Public comment: none.
4. Member reports.
Burbank: Our meetings should be announced to the public more effectively.
Seger: The studio manager does post annoucements at the studio.
Field: Can we send announcements to a list of press contacts?
Van Leuken: Should we ask reporters to attend, or to write about AOC?
Field: will invite one.
Burbank: The most important story is not AOC, but access TV in general.
Van Leuken: A visitor from Cornell Institute for Public Affairs was
interested in having her student(s) do internships or research as part of
their coursework. Could this be useful for AOC?
This could be next semester (100 hours for one student).
5. Budget Planning.
Seger has sent letters to our list of school contacts, inviting them to
submit requests for equipment and inviting them to attend our February or
March meeting. No replies yet.
Burbank advises followup phone calls.
Seger: will write a press release saying we're seeking proposals.
Stefanelli: City, town, and village governments may also have interests
and make proposals. AOC can invite them personally (Burbank: town of
Ithaca, Seger: city of Ithaca, van Leuken: city of Ithaca or village of
Cayuga Heights).
Seger: I can invite the County government too.
Stefanelli: Jim Blizzard is also a contact with the County. We could
invite him, or someone else from the County, to explain their resources
and needs.
Van Leuken: concerned that schools didn't respond. Which schools have
submitted programming?
Stefanelli: Of the K -12 schools, only Dryden. Others have promised but not
submitted anything yet. The TC3 "High School Challenge" quiz program is
played on our cable and also on Binghamton Public Broadcasting.
Stefanelli has spoken to the Alternative Community School principal about
the $2000 in the present budget intended for ACS.
Seger: When I do followup phone calls, I'll ask each school to come to the
March meeting with budget proposals, or to come later with reports, or
else to send something in writing. We want 1) budget proposals and 2)
plans for programming, or the programming itself.
Questions on the satellite dish:
Stefanelli: it will be easy to find an extra modulator to use with it. No
request has been received from Mary Loehr yet.
Burbank: will send a copy of the form to Mary.
Stefanelli: the dish was funded by TWC using money TWC had to spend
for
PEG under the previous franchise.
6. Brainstorming about the possibilities for managing the Access Studio as
a Not - for - Profit.
7. Manager's report (oral):
Stefanelli: The capital budget for the coming year is now being created.
Quotes for equipment are in line with expectations -- including
computers - -so I hope next month I can say everything has been ordered.
PEG awards are in process. Shane Seger was one of the judges. The
awards
ceremony will be 8 to 9:30 pm Friday, Feb. 23 (and carried on live TV).
Refreshments from 7 to 8.
She has met Mustafa, the new video teacher at ACS, and describes him as
enthusiastic.
She is now able to update the PEG website using Microsoft Word, since
Word
can now handle .html files.
8. Next meeting March 13, 5 pm, Town Hall.
Adjourned about 6:30.
