MEETING MINUTES
Sept. 10, 2012
5:30 -7:00 pm
City Hall, 108 E. Green St.
In attendance:Joe McMahon(Chair)
Members: Anna Stalter (Co- chair), Ron Herring, F. Robert Wesley (CU Natural
Areas),
Chris Proulx (CC Liaison), Aaron Donato, Todd Bittner (CU Natural Areas liaison)
Ex- Officio Jeanne Grace (City Forestry Technician)
Notetaker is Anna; there were no changes to the agenda.
August minutes were approved with minor corrections.
Announcements: Upcoming Plantations lecture on old growth forests and visit by
Jean Maloof to Fischer Woods.
Joe saw green heron at Six Mile for the first time.
Joe attended the Aug. 21 Planning Board meeting about the water plant. The phase 2
site plan for reservoir access road and settling ponds is available on City's website,
and in library. Two settling tanks will supplant the settling pond. Tree plantings
around settling pond likely to be conifers.
A question was raised about parking at the upper Giles St. entrance. Are there
designated parking spaces there? It is actually a No Parking, tow away zone.
No rangers were in attendance. Their positions are funded through most of
September. Doug (natural areas ranger) reported to Joe that he found cable and
mechanics for a zip line at the 30 foot dam.
Six Mile Creek trail marking: All responses to Joe's proposal to blaze the trails
were favorable. Joe passed out maps of proposed signage locations. A discussion
about how to properly mark trails followed. One suggestion was to use blazes in one
color to mark trails, and use "dead end" or "no maintenance" signs where
appropriate..
Jeanne's crew could help post signs, and the city sign shop could produce them.
Todd related that a lot of Cornell signs have been stolen, but that the use of tamper
proof bolts seems to prevent theft.
Should there be blazes where trails intersect? Designate one main trail or loop? One
color ... with side trails another color? Guiding principle: avoid visual clutter.
Jeanne talked to Bill Gray and Ray Benjamin and they seem ok with the idea, and
NAC probably doesn't need explicit permission. Chris will present the results of our
discussion to the planning board at their next meeting.
BPW meets next week. Joe will send something for their agenda.
Friends of Six Mile Creek Event
Anna suggested a volunteer recruitment event be held, since there may be new
residents in the neighborhood. Event could include guided walks and other
activities. Joe and Robert could attend. Event will be on Sept. 30, 2 -4 pm.
Other business:
How to improve access route from Fall Creek to Stewart Park, and provide view of
falls. The high school trail is eroding.
Todd suggests a planning grant to connect all trails from the village of Dryden to
Cascadilla Creek to Black Diamond. Chris will talk to Tom Knipe about the tourism,
economic development angle.
