COMMUNITY POLICE BOARD MINUTES
Regular Meeting 3:30 p.m. February 26, 2020

Call to Order: 3:33p.m.
Approval of the January 22, 2020 Community Police Board Meeting Minutes- Resolution:
By Commissioner : Onyejuruwa: Seconded by Commissioner Simons
RESOLVED, That the minutes of the January 22, 2020 Community Police Board meeting be
approved as published.
Carried Unanimously
Report from Common Council:
Alderperson Kerslick requested that Board members Rogers, Beem-Miller, and Wright confirm
their wish to continue with the Community Police Board. All confirmed they intend to continue,
the re-appointments will be on the March Common Council Meeting Agenda.
Report from the Police Department:
Deputy Chief Joly reports that Chief Nayor published the IPD year end report.
Three compliments received via email for members of IPD were shared.
A brief overview of the Annual Report is given, including mention of short staffing, efforts in
keeping up morale, and that statistically crime numbers are down overall.
Board members asked questions about the interviewing process for new recruits, and tools for
the report of incidents and police activity.
Board member Onyejuruwa stated that he would like to have more time to review the IPD
Annual Report and ask questions in the future.
A discussion ensued regrading the IPD's LGBTQ liaison position, it's intention and efficacy, and
best practices for reaching all community members.
Chair Kane issued a reminder for new members to participate in the Ride Alongs.
Old Business- Annual Report for CPB:
Commissioner Rogers asked for feedback on the draft of CPB Annual Report, needed edits are
noted.
A brief discussion occurred regarding the process followed for IPD internal investigations.
Commissioners discussed making the community aware of the CPB, and outreach strategy in
general- where to identify potential places to contact or table.
Commissioner Rogers suggests that new Board members look into the past year's reports,
complaints, and compliments, on file in the City Clerk's Office.
Chair Kane reports that a gentleman at Bosces is interested in speaking with members of the
Community Police Board. Commissioners Onyejuruwa, Simons, and Youth Commissioner
Logue express interest and will reach out.
Chair Kane & Commissioner Rogers discussed a draft letter to the Mayor addressing his
presentation of information related to IPD. The draft letter is handed out and the Board will
reconvene regarding the letter and possible distribution at a later date.
Motion to enter Executive Session to discuss active investigations:
By Commissioner Simons: Seconded by Commissioner Wright
RESOLVED, That the Board enter into Executive Session to 2020-1
Reconvene:
The Board reconvened into regular session with no formal action taken.
ADJOURNMENT:
On a motion the meeting adjourned at 5:04 p.m.
