The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation ("DEC") has
issued to the Village of Cayuga Heights a Permit to Take Nuisance or Destructive
Wildlife, commonly referred to as a Deer Damage Permit. The Village is pleased,
though not at all surprised, to have received the DEC Deer Damage Permit,
conJidering that the Village has diligently researched and developed the Village's
deer poputation control piogram has carefully complied with all requirements of
the Siate Environmentai Quality Review Act (SEQR), as well as the DEC's permit
application process. The Village anticipates the issuance of a DEC License
to bolbct and Possess (LCP), allowing for the capture of does for surgical
sterilization.
With the DEC's granting of the Deer Damage Permit, the Village will be
proceed ing with d iscussions with responsible, professional contractors
iegarding ihe implementation of the population management program outlined
an-d reviewed in the Village's SEQR process. The first step will be surgical
sterilization and tagging of a core population of does, followed by culling the
remaining herd.
Please refer to the Village website for additional background and details on the
Village's deer population control program at http://www.cayuga-heights.ny.us/
