Lansing Chief o'f Police Auggst 10,2005 To: The Honorable Walter Lym Members of the Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights R-e: Report of the Police Department for July 2005 For the month of July there were a total of 11 1 complaints reported to the Police Department and 4 motor vehicle accidents investigated. There were a total of 85 traffrc tickets issued and 3 parking tickets written. During July there were 4 felony complaints: two for Burglary, one for an Attempted Burglary and one for Grand Larceny. A resident reported that his waliet was missing from the kitchen counter where he had left it the night before. There was no sign of forced entry. The other burglary was the report of shelves with bracket and supports missing from a room in a sorority. The attempted burglary was discovered after the offtcer responded to an alarm activation at a residence. Pry marks were found on the kitchen door leading fronr the garcge area. No entry was made. The grand larceny was the reported theft of a guitar from the baserment of a fraternity. There were four misdemeanors reported: two for Petit Larceny, one for Criminal Mischief and one for Menacing" A resident reported that the two unlocked vehicles parked in her driveway had been entered during the overnight hours and change had been taken. This appeared to be an isolated incident as no other reports of this type were received at the police department" A resident reported that her bicycle had been taken from an unsecured bike room area of an apartment building. The criminal mischief case was the report of unexplained damage done to a screen window of a residence. A resident reported that his step-son had chased him from the house with a pipe threader. It was found that he had also smashed the screen door. The step-son was upset due to a domestic situation with his mother and the complainant which had occurred the night before. After an investigation the step-son, an l8 year old male, was arrested for menacing. There were seven violations reported for the month of July: two for Disorderly Conduct, three for Unlawful Trespass, one for Unlawful Possession of Fireworks and one for Possession of Alcohol under 21. Both disorderly conducts were reports of loud noises or music, Both subjects responsible were advised of the complaints and there were no further problems. One of the unlawful trespass complaints was the report of youths on the roof of the Cayuga Heights School. The youths were found and all parents were called to pick up their child. The parents were explained the situation and the dangers involved. All parents agreed to handle the situation and no further action was taken by this department. While on patrol, an officer observed 2 teenagers at the Cayuga Heights School playground during the early morning hours. Both subjects were advised that they were trespassing on schooi grounds. The father of the girl responded to pick up his daughter and was not aware that she had left the house. The final trespass was reported by a resident who noticed that someone had entered his property during the night, moved items around in the pool area, lefl a can of spray paint on a table and wrote on the cement with chalk. From the nature of the writing, it appeared that the person responsible used to reside at the house. The previous owner was contacted by phone and stated that her son was living in the Ithaca area for the summer. The son was contacted and did admit to being there during the night. The subject stated that he had been drinking the night before and was walking back to his apartment. He apologized to the present homeowner who did not want to have the subject arrested. An officer responded to a report of fireworks being set off. The subject responsible was found and advised that possession of fireworks was illegal in New York State. The subject had recently moved to this area from the south and was unaware of this. The subject turned over the remaining fireworks to the officer. No further action was necessary. While on patrol the officer observed a group of subjects drinking in front of a fraternity. One subject quickly hid his bottle. Upon inquiring, the subject was found to be underage. The subject, a 20 year old male, was issued an appearurrae ticket for court under the ABC Law for underage possession of alcohol. Fraternity and Sorority Affairs office was notified about the incident. There were three Village Ordinance complaints involving the dog control law. Two were reports of dogs running loose and one report for a barking dog. In all cases the owners were notified and there were no further problems. There was one general Vehicle and Traffic complaint reported. During the month of July there were ninety-two miscellaneous complaints handled by the police department. During July, Officer Lanning held an employee training session at Kendal of Ithaca dealing with violence in the workplace. Officer Lanning also assisted in a practice bornb drill evacuation at Kendal. The full time officers worked 130.5 hours of overtime and the part-time officers worked 175.5 hours.
