Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - August, 2005
The Cayuga Heights Fire Department averaged a little over a call a day for the month of
August. We had a total of 34 runs this past month. There werc 22 EMS calls, 11 fire
calls and we went to Ithaca once on a mutual aid call. Response times and number of
responders to each call continue to be excellent with our little department. There were no
*uJot calls of note for the past month. We did perform another cat in tree rescue last
month. The homeowners were very grateful and the cat was successfully extricated from
the tree.
Our fall recruit training program is off to a great start. We have 11 new members for the
fire department and 4 new members for support staff. Many of the new members have
ayeady signed up for New York State fire ciasses and we look forward to helping thgm
through the process of becoming productive members of the department' As always the
class is a mix of people. About two thirds of the embers of the class are undergraduate
students at Comell but the rest can be considered as long term members of the
community. We do have several graduate students who will be in the area for many
years working on degrees. Through an extensive interview process we have selected this
class very carefuily and look for long term members.
The fire department in conjunction with Bolton Point has started to test the fire hydrants
in the village of Cayuga Heights. We realized after identifying the need to test the
hydrants that they had not been fulI tested since 1998. Our plan is to test all the hydrants
and then go through the village and clean and repaint the fire hydrants. We will paint the
top of each fire hydrant to reflect the amount of water flow we get from each hydrant. We
*ill ulro clear brush away from the hydrants and ensure that every hydrant has a marker
placed on it. Once the entire system is test a report will be made to the Village Trustees
onthe state ofthe sYstem.
On September 1lth the members of the department held a chicken barbeque to raise
monef for the Tunnel to the Towers team. To my knowledge this is the first chicken
barbeque fundraiser that our department has held in many years. The money raised will
be donated to the Steven Siller Lets Do Good for Children foundation. The department
,, fI ELP P R.E\/ET{T F [R"E,S"
participated in this event in New York City for the first time last year, and is very proud
io be participating again this year. This is a 5K run in memory of one of the firefighters
who lbst fris me on 917I. We hope to make this an annual event. I am very proud that
our department is able to participate in this. The team will go to New York City the
weekend of September 23fr. Assistant Chief Marshall Stocker will be aflag bearer for
the event and Firefighters Scott Martling, Lauren Putnam and Joe Palin will be the
running team.
The bunker program is doing well. All of our rooms are fuIl at this time and for the first
time in many years all of the bunkers over the age of 21 arc qualified to drive the
apparatus. This is a major step for us that we have been working towards for several
years now. We will hold company elections in October to fiIl the two vacant lieutenants
positions left vacant by recent departures of senior members.
