Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - June, 2005
The summer has proved to be very busy for us. There were 41 alarms in the month ofJune' This is an amazing pace forihe summer time and our members have been keepingup the pace very well' -we
had 17 EMS calls, rq fire ca[s and we went mutual aid 5times for the month' There were i9 calls in tle vilage, 17 calls in the town and as statedbefore we went mutual aid 5 times. Many of the nrz .*rt. for the month were related tothe heavy storms that continually blew thrlugh o* ur"u i' June. we had numerous callsfor downed power lines and alirm panels aitivated due to power surges. while thesecalls are routine at times they are some of our -ort;u;;;ro'us calls beca--use of the dangerto the community from live power lines being tcnockeiaown. These calls are also verytime consuming because of the tong wait ror Nyspc io u.rlrr" during major storms.
The station looks greatt The garden out front is in full bloom and the grormd cover hasfinally covered the dirt-in the g;oen- It is a spot tharmany folks waiting for the bus sit atin the morning" The back d6or that has been in uuJ ,iupe for a couple of years hasfinally been replaced a|d is working well" The".*rLiiing of the parking spaces seemsto be working well and people ur" l-.r, confused as to wiicn way to go to pull out of thestation' we had some difficutty this past month after the slorms with our phone system. It seems that a power surge knocked out several phones at the fire station. 'This problemwas quickly resolved and we are looking into_geiting ,.u.rur non computer based phonelines installed at the station that will
"ot u. affe"cteo f"y p"*o outages. Ladder 231 t'uewa belt over the 4th of July weekend and was out or'r.*i"" for a day" This work wascovered by the warranty. The major problem that presanteo itsef ouring this was that wewere unable to find the proper siie uett on the holiday weetena. we spoke with E-oneand they are in the process of getting a supply of belts and hoses to, rizl utitre shop inBinghamton so we don,t have tlri. piUt.m again.
on July l2tr' we had the dedication ceremony for Ladder 231. It was very nice. weinvited four of the founding members of the aepartmeni *a ,rr.y were all able to attend. It was the first time in years that they had all been in the same room. It was great to seethem all talking over the beginnings oitrr. department. Ti; event was well attended and

well covered by the local media. There was a nice article and picture in The Ithaca
Journal. The new plaque for the truck wiil be mounted soon.
The members of the department are looking forward to a full fall of training" We will be
starting our Fall Recruit Class in September will have space for 15 new members" The
Membership Committee has been working very hard to go through all the applications
and make selections for new members. We are talking with the Lansing Fire Department
about doing once a month joint trainings to further relations between the two
departments.
At a recent meeting with the Lansing Fire Department and the mayor of the Village of
Lansing we spoke at length about the Village of Cayuga Heights providing fire protection
for the Village of Lansing. After many discussions with the officers of this department
and Mayor Lynn it was decided that it would not be in the best interest of the Village of
Cay,aga Heights to provide the coverage for Lansing. The major factor in this decision
was the fact that we felt it would be detrimental to the protection we give our current
district. We offered to help out in any way possible with automatic mutual aid but we did
not want to take over fire protection for the Village of Lansing. Everybody at the
meeting seemed satisfied.
Things are going well at the station and we look forward to the rest of the summer.
