Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - March, 2005
We slowed down a little in March with only 29 calls for the month. There were 14 calls
in the village, 12 calls in the town and 3 mutual aid calls. We ran 16 EMS calls and 13
fire calls for the month. We had two car fires in the past month, one of which occurred
right over the fuel storage tanks at the local gas station. Quick action by the firefighters
on scene resulted in a rapid knockdown of the flames and a major disaster was averted.
We had a routine haining month in March. We did ventilation training in the beginning
of the month. Later in the month we did a live bum at the training tower and this keeps
up our goal of one live burn training a month. We also went to the I-ansing station to do
car fire training at the end of the month. This was an excellent training and it was also
good to train with our neighbors. For EMS taining last month we covered AED
certification for our EMTs. Through the hard work of Rescue Director Bruce Derrick the
fire station is now a Public Access Defibrillator site and our basic EMTs are able to
administer Epinephrine Pens fbr allergic reactions. We are looking forward to a busy
month of training in April. We have an EVOC class scheduled as well as guest trainers
from a downstate departrnent to work on our fire search tactics. We are also working
with an engineer from E-One to train on our new ladder truck which will be in the station
by the second weekend in April. As always training is our highlight every month. We
nm rnany calls but without our training staff and willing members to participate we
would not be the team that we are.
Our annual banquet is in a couple of weeks. Our department elections were held on April
5'n and we have an excellent slate of officers. We are running short one assistant chief
offlrcer at this point because nobody met the guidelines for the position. All of our
lieutenant positions are frlled with fully qualified officers. We set stringent guidelines for
these positions. The chief officers all stayed the same with the exception of the Asst.
Chief Mariano Garcia. Mariano has decided to step down this year due to an expanding
family and a limited amount of time. We will miss him very much in this deparhnent; his
contributions through his years with the deparhnent are immeasurable" Attached to this
report is the resume for our newest officer Lieutenant Jason Gleghorn. Jason is a bunker
,,
X-[ ELP PREVENT F [R.ES''
and one of our most active members. We are excited about the upcoming year and will
soon have an officers meeting to set our goals for the coming year.
Our station project has now come to a close. With the new plaques on the walls and
pictures hung we are pleased with the results and thank Norma Manning and Julie Farris
for all their hard work. The fire station looks much better now. We have pictures of our
past and present hung and in a display case is the gear that Firefighter Ron Anderson
wore during his active years with the department. We are pleased with the results.
All the bunker rooms are full at this time and several members have expressed interest in
bunking at the station in the future. All our pieces of apparatus in are good working order
at this time. We had some electrical problems fixed last month.
