Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - January, 2005
The Cayuga Heights Fire Department had abusy start for 2005. We ran 34 alarms for the
month. There werc22callsinthevillage, l0catlsinthetownand2mutualaidcalls. On
Jaluary 2"d we had a call for fire in the walls of the residence. First arriving units found a
smoke condition in the home with smoke coming from the eves of the house. After an
intense search for the seat of the fre crews found the seat of the fire, extinguished it, and
the homeowners were able to stay in the house that night. The firefighters on scene did
an outstanding job. There were 17 EMS calls and17 fire calls forthe month.
On January 29e Rescue Director Bruce Derrick put together an 8 hour training session
covering topics including blood borne pathogens, rescue topics and CPR recertification.
Thrrre were 47 members of the fire departrnent present for this training. That number
includes every active member of the departrnent. This many members attending a
training that took place on a Saturday is a testament to the dedication of our fire and EMS
providers. We look forward to a busy spring of training. We decided noJ to run a spring
recruit class so we can concentrate on the development of our current members. We are
looking forward to an outstanding spring and summer.
Lel; and the painters are down to the final push on the painting project with the bunker
area as the only area left. The bunkers have decided on a similar color to the one that's
on the walls already and hopefully within the next month the entire station will have been
repainted. We had a water leak under the station that the DPW and Bolton Point fixed for
us recently and all is well on that front.
The new ladder truck is scheduled to be finished and shipped from the plant in Florida on
Much 21". The truck committee is going to Florida on March l1th and 12th for the
inspection of the truck. Once the truck is done and all testing is completed in Florida it
will be driven to the dealer in Binghamton for lettering and final add ons that are in the
contract. We look to having the truck in the station by the second week in April. The
deller is firm on this time line and we look forward to seeing the truck in mid March on
our trip.
,, H ELF P R.EVET{T F T R.E,S''
The invitations for the annual banquet will be mailed soon and we have booked the
Country Club of Ithaca for this year's banquet. As we said before this will be the 50ft
Anniversary. We are tying hard to track down the original members of the fre
deparftnent. There were 20 original members of the deparhent in 1955 and it is proving
difFrcult to track down the whereabouts of some of these sentlemen. We are worline
with founding member Fleet Morse on this project.
The bunker rooms are all firll and things are working well. Our program continues to
serve as an example for other deparbnents looking at starting bunking progrcms. I-ast
month we were asked by the Dryden Fire Department for information about our program
and this month we were asked by the Hopewell Fire Department near Canandaigua for
information. Their chief is very interested in a bunking program and heard that ours was
very successfirl. He and some of his members hope to visit the station soon to have a
look.
