Honorable Walter Lym, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - November,2006
At iast the volunteers of Cayuga Heights got a breather in November. With the openingof the Thurston Arlenue Bridge the Ithaca Fire Deparlment discontinued the request for
automatic mutual aid. We slowed down to our normal call volume in November. For the
month we had 36 runs. There were 15 EMS calls and 16 fire calis with only 5 requestsformutual aid. There were 18 calls in the village of Cayuga Heights and 13 calls in theTown of Ithaca. On November l4th, during a jointiraining *ittt th. Lansing Fire
Department, we received a cali for mutual aid to the P&C on N. Triphammer Road. We
responded with L231 and manpower to assist with a fire on the roof of the store. On
November 26th our FAST team was called to assist Dryden and Varna at a ftrein Varna,s
district. The Cayuga Heights Fire Department continues to respond to every call we
receive in an expedient manner and provides outstanding coverage to our community.
The Fall 2006 Recruit Class graduated last Sunday. We held the graduation ceremony in
the truck bay of the fire station during the spaghetti dinner. Of the 15 recruits we started
the class with we graduated all 15. They attended all three classes held atthe fire station
and we have all of them signed up for the upcoming Firefighter I classes in Tompkins
and Cortland Counties. We have successfully enrolled all of them in the class. They
continue to work diligently toward completion of the probation checklists. I have
attached a copy of the probation checklist with this report to allow the board to see howin depth the initial training is at the fire department. This checklist allows the new
member to get off probation and into a black helmet with the title of exterior firefighter.
After they have been exterior firefighters for 90 days and they take the required NewYork State trainings then they are eligible to apply for interior firefighter rtut,.rr. To
become an interior firefighter the candidate needs to demonstrate profiiiency in a long
list of skills. After completion of the checklist the candidate applies to fire council for
change of status. At the fire council meeting we decide if the candidate not only meets
the requirements but also demonstrates the competency for this level of firefighting. Thefire council will recommend further training if needed or approve the candidate for
interior status.
,, f{E,LP PREVET{T FIR ES"
The fire company held its community spaghetti dinaer on December 9th. We fed
approximately 150 people at the fire station. We held station tours and information
sessions for people who stopped by. The children attending the dinner had a wonderful
time. Jeff Zamanski and the officers of the fire company are to be commended for their
hard work to make this a great event at the station. Community members were very
impressed with the station and the membership. It was very nice to be able to graduate
the recruit class in front of the community they have been training to protect.
We are looking forward to our break in training for the holidays. Many of our members
will be leaving for the Cornell University break. Our local members are aware that this is
happening and we are on our toes a little more in the middle of the night to continue to
provide excellent coverage. Several of our new members are returning from break early
to start the Cortland County Firefighter 1 class. They are planning on coming to Ithaca
and because they won't have apartments to live in until the semester starts they will be
staying at the fire station.
Everything at the station seems to be working well these days, Lt. Lisi and Jeff Frisbee
are working very hard to keep the vehicles maintained. We will probably break the
magic 600 call number for 2006. This has been a very busy year for the Cayuga H.eights
Fire Department.
Sincerely, / //'-rtr/r, t/ N
Sorge Tamborelle
F{ire Chief/Fire Superintendent
