RE: Long Range Plan for Village Trees
After serving one year as village forester I am prepared to recommend that the Village
move in a new, more proactive way to enhance the forested CayugaHeights that we
treasure. As the village has aged its trees have also growrr old arrd irr some cases in need
of replacement and removal. The white pines on the Parkway and the silver maples on
Cayuga Heights road are examples of trees that have reached or in some cases surpassed
normal maturity. This year a number of these specimens have had to be removed in a
costly manner. I would propose a three step plan:
1. INVENTORY AND LOCATE
Currently it is difficult to identify which trees are on village right-of-ways and the
responsibility of the village. I propose dividing the Village into a number of zones that
correspond roughly to the age off the trees in each zone, or the time of development.
Following this Village employees should systematically locate and mark all trees located
on the Village right-of-way.
2. SEEK EXPERT ADVICE
The second recommendation is for the village to hire a certified Arborist who can
survey the village trees, by zones, and make recommendations for removal, pruning and
or other types of care. This could be accomplished over time by contracting for one or
two zones per year. Most of the recommendations could be carried out by the cgrrent
village employees. A regular budget line could be establishedto insure t\1t the job getsdone. 7
3. TREE REPLACEMENT
The Village should start on a program of tree replacement. The above mentioned
consultant should be able to make recommendations in this area as well. A regular budget
line could be established so that over time w€ can make sure the Villaee remains a
forested reserve.
I would be glad to respond to questions you might have or assist in carrying out the
above steps if you desire. It has been a pleasure to work with you on this important task.
