Honorable Walter Llmn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Reporl * Octoberl 2006
We continue to be b3r;v at the Cayuga Heights Fire Department. We had 59 runs for themonth of october. There were 24 calls in ihe village, i6 calls in the Town of Ithaca and19 mutual aid requests. There were 27 EMS runs and 13 fire calls. We are lookingforward to a slow down in our mutual aid responses with the opening of the ThurstonAvenue Bridge. The bridge opened to northbound traffic on Novemb.i0tn. this allowsthe Ithaca Fire Department to respond in a timely manner to calls in their district. Wewill resume the automatic mutual aid in March when construction resumes on the bridge. Our members are doing very well responding to these calls but we are all looking forwardto a slowdown of the hectic pace we have been running.
Our recent recruits are doing an amazingjob for the department. We have had all three inhouse trainings and have kept all 15 new members. Ail recruits are working diligently toget through their checklists and several will have their probation checklisti done by thefire councii meeting in December with all of them being off probation by February. Wehave 8 of the recruits enrolled in the January Firefighter t class here in Tompkins Countyand possibly 6 more enrolled in the Cortland class. At this time, because we have not lostany of the recruits, we probably will not run a spring class.
We have been running ahard training program this fall. We are not only running specialclasses for the recruits but also continuing the regular department trainings as well. Weare having a joint training with the Lansing Fire bepartment on water tanker operationson November l4rb. During this training Lansing -ill bring two tankers into the villageand we will practice water supply operations. W. ut" *otking on these skills so we areproficient if we ever need to run tanker operations in the viilale. In early December weare bringing in Tom Basher, the counties lead fire instructor, to teach aclass on standpipeoperations and how to support sprinkler systems. We have many build.ings withsprinklers and we don't get enough practice with these systems so Tornis going to comein and work with us on this subiect.

Several members of the fir:e department participated in a recent American Heart
Association CPR Instructors Course held at the fire station. This class was sponsored and
paid for by the fire company with money from community donations to the fire company.
These members took the class with the intention of offering free CPR classes to residents
of our community. On November 4'n these instructors held a free CPR class at the fire
station that was attended by 6 residents of our community. All involved found this to be
a very positive experience and we will continue to offer these classes periodically
throughout the year. These instructors are also able to teach and recertify our members at
our annual training. The fire company is also sponsoring a free spaghetti dinner for the
community at the fire station on December 10'n. This dinner will be held at the station
and be open to all residents of our community. This is a way to say thank you for all that
the community does for the department.
We continue to spend a lot of funds on the fire station upkeep these days. Recently we
discovered a leak in the roof. After investigating it was found that one of the original
contractors placed a framework for electrical supply on the roof and just bolted the frame
to the roof without weather proofing it. A simple bucket of tar seems to have remedied
this problem. We continue to have Donahue and Halverson in to the station to fix and
replace circulating pumps on the hot water system. These pumps seem to fail on a
regular basis. There seems to be a problem with the length of the runs that the pumps
support. We do as much in house preventive maintenance as we can.
Sincerely.
George Tamboreile
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
