Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - September,2006
The increased pace of calls continued in September with a total of 65 calls for the month.
There were 23 EMS calls and 16 fire ca1ls wrth29 requests for mutual aid. We had 26
runs in the Village of Cayuga Heights and 10 calls in the Town of lthaca. In September
we were requested to respond to the north bound lane of Route 13 for a fully involved car
fire. Cayuga Heights fire and Cayuga Heights police responded to the scene and shut
down the highway for a brief period of time. The excellent coordination befween fire and
police units resulted in a quick knock down of the fire and reopening of the road in a very
short amount of time. We continue to provide mutual aid coverage to the City of Ithaca.
The members of the fire department continue to enthusiasticaliy cover all the calls
assigned to us.
The fall recruit class started on October 7t1'. We have a class of 15 new members and
they are already training hard. We will have three recruit training sessions in house
before they can take the Firefighter One class or Scene Support. Of the 15 new recruits 8
of them are NYS certif, red EMTs. We had our first class at the station on the 7'1' and the
recruits were taught the department SOPs, the basics of the rescue squad, issued turnout
gear and pagers and taught how to hit a fire hydrant and flow water from hoses. The
recruits were very excited about the training and the officers of the department are
excited about.our prospects with this class. We continue training on October 28th and
November 18th. We set a deadline of February 8'n for these new members to complete
their probation checklists.
Our membership continues to train as a group. All of our EMTs will complete there bi-
annual continuing medical education requirements. A1l department EMTs are required to
show evaluators that they are proficient with their skills. Several of our members are
taking the American Heart Association CPR Instructors course in preparation for starting
our community CPR Program. LT Scott Martling is in charge of our FAST Team
training and has been putting together some quality FAST scenarios" Our team continues
to be called to working structure fires in the Town of Dryden. A11 of our members assist
with the recruit class trainings to fully integrate the new members to our way of
operating.

During Fire Prevention Week we are scheduled to go to the Northeast Elementary School
to teach fire prevention and fire extinguisher use to the counselors of the child care
program. We will have the Cayuga Heights Elementary School to the fire station on the
17'n of October and will take trucks to Northeast Elementary on October 19th. On
October 15th we will have our annual Open House at the station. We look forward to the
usual group of demonstrators to the station. The Cayuga Heights Police will be over to
the station, STAT Medevac will fly in a helicopter, the Tompkins County Sheriffs office
will bring over some of their equipment, and the SWAT team will be present as well as
several other local agencies. We look forward to this event every year as an opportunity
to show off our equipment and our membership.
The station is in good shape at this time. All the apparatus are working well.
Sincerely, /l /ll /.--\ l/ //t/ | 'l//// | /Y//lt \l ,/l /,/ll , v \./
