Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly
l"non
- Ju1y, 2006
In July the volunteers of the Cayuga Heights Fire Department set a record with 59 calls
for the month. In August we shattered that record by running 73 calls for the month.
While the number does reflect the increase of calls due to the mutual aid with Il,haca,2l
calls total, this means we did actually nn 52 calls in our district. We had 24 calls in the
town and 28 calls in the village. These numbers reflect an amazing accomplishment. On
August 29th wehad three cail dispatched at the same time. We were able to cover all the
calls without need for help from other deparfments. We had 26 EMS calls and 26 fire
calls. There were several calls of note for the month. We were requested to respond our
FAST team to Varna twice. Once when they had afre at the Wiicox press building and s
second time for a traiier fire. We responded to a reported kitchen fire at the apartments at
600 Warren Road. Fortunately the fire was out prior to our arrival but our firefighters
responded all our equipment and were ready to act in a very short time. The third notable
situation was the before mentioned three calls at the same time situation. The firefighters
and EMTs of the Cayuga Heights Fire Department should be commended for the service
they provide to the residents of the fire district.
We are preparing for the fall recruit training class. Currently we are looking forward to a
class of at least 15 new members" We will be holding a new member dinner in mid
September and we will accept the new members into the department at the company
meeting in late September. The first recruit training class will be held in early October.
As stated in previous reports we will be trying to recruit more freshmen from the
incoming class to try and get some longevity from the student members.
We just held a truck rodeo to certify new drivers and we have seven new apparatus
drivers on the books. We have a very strict driver training program and the truck rodeo is
an obstacle course evaluation that we put all new drivers through. The rodeo tests the
handling skills of the drivers. Our training program is getting back up to speed after our
summer hiatus and we look forward to a great fall fuli of good trainings" Assistant
Rescue Director Kim Bothi has been working hard to develop a community CPR
program through the fire department. ln September and October many of our members
will be taking the American Heart Association CPR Instructors Course in preparation for
,' f-{ ELP P R.EVE,IVT F [R.E S''
offering free CPR classes to residents of the fire district. This program will be funded lly
the donations sent to the fire company and is our way of giving something back to the
community for the generous donations.
The fire trucks are all in good working order at this time. R241 is a great piece of
equipment. It responded on every EMS call we had in August. E202 is having some
problems with shifting so it will be going to Syracuse to the Allison Transmission shop to
be serviced in mid September. Firefighter Jack Hessmer spent many long hours in
August converting the retired R241 into the new U243. He removed most of the cabinets
from the back of the old Jeep and reinstalled the back seats. The Jeep is currently in
service as a utility/backup rescue/command vehicle. After several lengthy discussions
with Pierce regarding E203 and the fan problem from two months ago we got most of the
cost of the repair back from them. This money will go back to the maintenance budget.
We also paid nothing for the repair to the Plymovent System. We have a new fan motor
on top of the fire station and that system is running very well.
We are iogking forward to the fire department Open House in October. We enjoy this
event every fall because it gives us a chance to show off our capabilities to the
community. We also look forward to fire prevention week because it gives us a chanoe
to go into the schools and talk about fire prevention. This week is very important to the
entire fire service. Since the inception of fire prevention week in schools there has been a
marked decrease in the number of residential fires. This program works well and the
firefighters enjoy getting the word out to children.
A11of the bunker rooms are full at this time and the fire station is in great shape.
