The T'ompkins county water Resources council (wRC) is seeking applications for municipal representatives ordesignees to serve on the wRC' The municipal seat thai is currently vacant expires at the end of Decembe r 2009.Your assistance in making rgcommendations for candidates to fill the vacancy would be greatly appreciated. The wRC advises the Tompkins county Legislature on matters related to water resources management and planningand is charged with identifuing problems, proposing priorities, and promoting the coordination of activities in themanagement and protection of the County;s water resources. The urnC prorTides a public forum for localcommunities and stakeholder groups to address and discuss their water resources concems, and it is the intent of thegroup to coordinate the water resources-related efforts of local governments, public and private institutions, andagencies andorganizations throughout the county. wRC memf,ership consists of 21 voting members representingvarious water-related interests and six non-voting members from releiant federal and state agencies. Water Resources Council th* TOMPKINS COUNTY o^etrse;frw17)urces Environmental:il Management Council The S&.C has vacancies for representatives of the genererl public (at-large seats), economic develop_ ment interests, business & industry, the environ_ ment, and watershed organizations. With these and ofher representatives from a diverse array of stakeholder interests, the WRC is uniquely posi- tioned to consider water resources from within the environment and economic contexts. As part of its charge from the County Legislafure, the WIC provides recommendations and guidance for managing water resources within the County, supports local governments in the implementation of relevant regulations, and organizes targeted workshops and trainings throughout the County. Recent act:ivities of the WRC include: @ Imlllementing a program to assess significant groundwater resources in Tompkins Countv @ Prc,viding assistance with newiederal stormwater regulations @ Re-evaluating local water resources programs to ensure holistic watershed-based approaches Deadline for WRG applications is Septemb er T ,2006. The EMC has vacancies for representatives of the general public and selected municipal repre- sentatives. Since 191 7, the Environmental Man- agement Council has been Tompkins County govemment's official citizen advisory board on local environrnental issues. EMC membership is diverse, inclu<ling citizens with a variety of in- terests and bar:kgrounds. Theprimary nole of the EMC is to identifu prob- lems, propose priorities and promote coordina- tion in the development and management of the County's natural resources. The EMC works on topics based on the environmental needs of the community. Some recent projects include: @ Campaign to ban open burning of house hold waste in Tompkins County @ Local Action Plan to Reduce County Government Emissions @ Sample wind tower ordinance @ County Go,vernment pledge to reduce emissions 1ty 20% by 2008 Deadline for EMC applications is October 24,2006. Membership in these organizations is open to all residents of Tompkins Countyand is a great opportunity for citizens to provide input into decisions about thelocal environment.
