Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - June, 2006
Once again we had a very busy month. The Cayuga Heights Fire Department ran 48 calls
for the month of June. There were 23 incidents in the Village of Cayrga Heights, 17
incidents in the Town of, Ithaca and we responded to 8 requests for Mutual Aid. There
werc 22 EMS calls and 19 fire calls. We had a very busy month for mutual aid calls.
This occurred for two reasons. The fnst is the request by the Ithaca Fire Department for
Carytga Heights to respond on automatic mutual aid for calls in the town and city of
Ithaca dwing the construction on the roads at Comell University. The Ithaca Fire
Department realized that with the road construction in the north campus and West
Avenue areas that their response times would be greatly delayed. With this tealizatton,
and the ability for the Cayuga Heights Fire Department to provide excellent coverage,
they requested that we respond on calls in their district automatically so there is not any
delay itt ftre and EMS protection in those areas. So far the system has worked well. The
second significant mutual aid call in June was an activation of the State Wide Mutual Aid
System during the flooding in Broome County. The request was made on June 29h for
Tompkins County to provide as rnany units for flood relief assistance as possible'
Cayuga Heights Fire Deparhnent along with eigtrt other county deparfnents sent crews to
Broome County for four days of assistance. We sent Lt. Joe Lisi and Firefighters Dave
Openshaw and Adrian Kinsella on the deployment. Over the four days the crews
working closely with the Binghamton Fire Department our crew assisted in pumping over
60 basements and doing countless welfare checks on people in the area. We are very
proud of the job performed by these firefighters.
The training program with the fire deparhnent has slowed greatly over the summer. We
do have all day t*itriog at the burn tower on July 8ft for the new "experienced" members
we accepted in the department this summer. This program is going very well. The
members we accepted have done very well with their checklists and several of them are
currently in the driver training program. These members have come to the deparbrrent
with significant past firefighting experience with other departments and we accepted
them and are putting them through an accelerated training program to brush up on skills
and teach them the 'oCayuga Heights" way of doing things. This has worked very weil
for us. We are looking forward to a decent sized recruit class in the fall as well as
,,
f.N ELF P R,EVE,I{T F {R.ES''
picking up &e pace for u'ainireg in the fatrl. Srrumer is historically a slow down period in
training due to vacations and fal'nily cornnnitments.
We continue to interact well with the public over the swnmer. Tours of the station occur
almost weekly with the numerous surlrnrer cannps in the area. We are also looking
forward to the demo with the EOCES students in mid "Iuly. The fire station is in great
demand for kids over the $unfloer as a place to get a\May frorn tlae normaX camp ror.ltine.
We enjoy showing off the equipment for the kids.
The file station itseXf is doing well. We are in our $$n&ler naaintenance nnode. Recently
we have had the generator serviced, the air cond.itioni:ng systern serviced, the tleree heavy
fire trucks are getting annual testing done, hoses, air packs and ladders are all being
tested. We teave found that with a good naeasure of preventive maintenance it keeps the
overall rnaintenance costs rnanageable as well as keeping the erylipment in service.
Though great efforts of, noany n'lenrbors the lawn and exterior of the station atrso look
wonderfirl, The new rescue truck chassis has been delivered by Fill Cooke and it is
currently at the builders getting all the modifications done. We trook forward to delivery
of tlre truck in the third week in July.
We are doing well at the fire departrnent. We are acoornptrishing our ntission and doing it
safetry. Our menobers a.t'e outstanding and dre vitrlage can be proud of its fre departrnent.
Sincerely,
EMERGENCY C,ALX"S! 48 TOTAL CALLS Y$AR TO DATET 259
