Re: Report of the Police Department for May 2006
For the month of May there were a total of I22 complaints reported to the police department and 3 motor
vehicle accidents investigated. There were atotal of 62 haffic tickets issued and 13 parking tickets written"
During May there were no felony complaints. There were nineteen misdemeanors reported: One for
Issuing a Bad Check, seven for Petit Larceny, nine for Criminal Mischief, one for Assault and one for
Identity Theft. The bad check case was closed with the restitution received in full. Two pending bad check
cases from April were also closed in May as the outstanding funds were received. Two of the petit
larcenies were reporled when customers pumped gasoline into their vehicles and left without paying. One
case was closed when the customer returned to pay. The other case is still open. A business reporled that a
file containing paperwork was taken from the office desk. After an investigation and reviewing the
business tapes, the suspect was identified. There is presently a wanant issued for the subject's anest" Two
petit larcenies were the theft of bird feeders from the Caluga Heights School grounds. A homeowner
reported the reflectors from the end of his driveway and his garbage can had been taken. A fraternity
member reported that a pafty decoration, a self-inllating clown balloon had been stolen and that he had
recognized it &om a facebook entry of the photo on the web. After an investigation the item was located,
returned to the owner and no charges were filed. One of the criminal mtschief cases was reporled by the
principal at CaTuga Heights School. During spring break numerous locks on exterior doors had been
damaged by superglue. Six homeowners reported their Ithaca Joumal paper boxes had been ripped from
their posts and thrown on the ground. The same complainants reported their mailboxes had been damaged
by someone breaking off the flags. A homeowner reported that one of his windows had been broken out
with a baseball and believes that a neighborhood youth is responsible. The ofhcer spoke to the parent of
the youth who was already aware of the accident and was making arrangements for the window to be
replaced. No fur1her action needed by the officer. The frnal criminal mischief was the report by a
homeowner that the power cables to the security camera had been cut and that leaves had been crammed in
front of the camera. The case is still under investigation. A male complainant reported that he had been
assaulted by another person in the face causing black eyes and a broken nose. The complainant signed an
accusatory which resulted in the arrest of a 27 year old male for assault. A resident reporled that an
unknown person had obtained his credit card number and used it to purchase gasoline. The resident stated
that he had been notified by his credit card company of this identity theft. After an investigation it was
found that the resident's son had used his credit card. The case was closed as unfounded.
There were eight violations reported for the month of May: six for Disorderly Conduct, one for Harassment
and one for Public Intoxication. Officers responded to the field near A-Lot for a report of a loud explosion.
Several subjects were standiag in the field with a potato gun and all did admit to being involved in the
firing of it. A11 subjects are Cornell students so they were turned over to Cornell PD who would refer them
to Judicial Administration. The off,rcer responded to a report of a disorderly subject at A-Lot who was
upset with the way a large truck was parked. The subject was driving through A-Lot using that route as a
short cut to avoid the corner. The subject was advised that he legally could not do that according to the
vehicle and traffic law. The subject agreed to back up and left the area" The remaining four disorderly
conduct complaints were due to loud music or noise. A1l subjects responsible were advised of fhe
complaint and there were no further problems. The officer was dispatched to a residence for a report of a
domestic in progress. Upon arrival, a male and female were outside the building engaged in a verbal
dispute. The female had asked him to leave which he did and then he tried to reenter, became angry anci
broke out a window. The 19 year oid male was arrested for harassment and an order of protection war;
issued by the Judge. The public intoxication case was the result of the officer responding with EMS
personnel for a subject experiencilg medical problems after eating mushrooms laced with a narcotic. The
19 year old female was issued an appearance ticket to court.
There were five Village Ordinance complaints: two for Dog Control and two Solicitor Permit Requests ancl
one complaint of a solicitor without a permrt. During May there were nine Vehicle and Traffic complaints:
three for parking, one for an abandoned vehicle, one for leaving the scene ofa motor vehicle accident and
four rniscellaneous traffic problems. There were a total of eighty-one miscellaneous complaints handled by
this department for the month of May.
During May, Officer Lanning held his DARE graduations, two ciasses at the Northeast School and oner
class at the Cayuga Heights Schooi. Officer Lanning attended a 2 day Safe School Seminar held in Utica at
the Mohawk Valley Law Enforcement Academy. Sgt Boyce and Officer Steinmetz held the semi-amual
qualifying at the range for all full and part-time officers" Office Steinmetz and Officer Wright held the
arurual bike rodeo at the Northeast School.
The fuli time officers worked 93.5 hours of overlime and the part-time offi.cers worked 132.5 hours. There
was a total of $307 reporled lost or stolen and $530 in properly recovered for the month of May.
