Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - May, 2006
The month of May offered no reprieve to the volunteers of Cayuga Heights wrth a 46
calls for the month. 23 calls in the Village, 17 in the Town of Ithaca and 6 mutual aid
responses. We had 30 EMS calls and 10 fire calls. Againthe number of EMS responses
dominate our call volume. Mutual Aid requests continue to pour in. Our neighbors
realize that we are an asset that they can count on and request us often. We are proud that
our training and dedication to the mission of the fre service is noticed by other
depmbnents in their time of need and we can be sure that when we are in need of help
these deparhnents will rush to our aid.
Training has fallen off for the summer months. We usually take a srxnmer hiatus from
training. We still train but the sessions are lower key with a lot of emphasis placed on
honing skills and keeping the equipment maintained. Our driving evaluators are working
hard with the members able to drive the apparatus to qualifu more apparatus operators.
We have a very stringent set of guidelines to be qualified in this department as an
apparatus operator and it takes many long hours of driving and pumping before a member
is cleared to drive the trucks. We require an Emergency Vehicle Operators Certificate as
well as the New York State Pump Operators Course and many hours spent driving and
pumping until the evaluators are satisfied that the operator can perform all the skilis
required to operate the trucks. The operators get qualified on one piece of apparutts at a
time. There is currently a New York State Pump Operators Course being held at the
Cayuga Heights Fire Deparhnent.
Through the summer months the fire station becomes a favorite stopping place for day
camp groups. We already have three groups scheduled to visit the station in July. We
also take two trucks to BOCES in July every year where we do a demonstration for the
special needs children at the Smith Building. This demo is one of our favorites every
year. The looks of wonderment on the faces of the special needs kids and the excitement
they show makes the day avery special one for us.
We continue to spend a lot of time maintaining the fire station. The lawn is really
corning in well after we fertilized and the DPW sprayed the seed in our barren spots. The
,, tr{ ELP P R.EVETVT F trR.ES"
fire ffircks are all scheduled f,or their annua] trips to Tyler Fire Eqlipmerat for pump
testing. The hose, ladder and air pack testing is scheduied for the sununetr. We just
placed alatge gear order with our vendor and look forward to having enough gear for the
fall recruit ctrass.
Ttrae Fal[ 2006 Recruit Class will start haining in Octoher this year. We leave a strong list
of prospeotive mernbers and keep in contact with those on the list to rnaintain interest.
This month we accepted some new members out of the normal reoruit prograrn. We
irnplemented a system that allows us to accept new nrembers with "significant prior
experience in tfoe fire or EMS service". What we krave done is accepted five members to
the deparhnent this surrumer. Three of'thern are fonner mernbers who have returned to
the area, one is an EIUT and the fifth is a grad student coming to Cornell with several
years of past fire figtrting experience in Fennsylvania. We look forward to good things
from these new nnembers"
Sincerely,
lr- //// V"r'v
