Dear Mayor Lynn,
sorry for the delay in communicating with you about the cayuga
Medical Center Corporate Boatd meeting which I attended as the Cayuga
Heights rep.
After the business of the meeting was concluded, Dr. Rob MacKenzie
reported on the state of the medical center and gave an overview of
the accomplishments of 2004. The focus was on new programs such as
the urgent prescription program to pay for drugs for people without
health insurance. United Wuy raised $50,000 to pay for this.
He noted that our center is a clinical site of excellence" This year
there arc 3'1. new board certified physicians. A $21M expansion of the
intensive carc and cardiac care division is under way.
He spoke of a 50,000 decline in us deaths in2004 due mainly to
improved treatments for heart disease, cancer and strokes and
indicated that this drop was reflected in the Medical centerts
statistics. CMC pneumonia mortality dropped and we are now a mentor
hospital after having introduced better methods of avoiding
ventilator acquired pneumonia. Cardiac arrest signs have been taught
to the nursesr and there has been a22oh reduction in stoke mortality
due to the use of cr scans and clot busting drugs. Mortarity
teduction from heart attacks has dropped 50% since 2002.
He spoke at length about the new Island Fitness Center which opened.
this year and is medically oriented with the goal of integrating
{itness and wellness services with rehabilitation and stress
management.
The center now has over 2000 members ,4soh ofwhich are 50 or older. The program concluded at 8:L5.
Re spectfully submitted.
