After the business of the meeting was concluded, Dr. Rob MacKenzie reported on the state of the medical center and gave an overview of the accomplishments of 2004. The focus was on new programs such as the urgent prescription program to pay for drugs for people without health insurance. United Wuy raised $50,000 to pay for this. He noted that our center is a clinical site of excellence" This year there arc 3'1. new board certified physicians. A $21M expansion of the intensive carc and cardiac care division is under way. He spoke of a 50,000 decline in us deaths in2004 due mainly to improved treatments for heart disease, cancer and strokes and indicated that this drop was reflected in the Medical centerts statistics. CMC pneumonia mortality dropped and we are now a mentor hospital after having introduced better methods of avoiding ventilator acquired pneumonia. Cardiac arrest signs have been taught to the nursesr and there has been a22oh reduction in stoke mortality due to the use of cr scans and clot busting drugs. Mortarity teduction from heart attacks has dropped 50% since 2002. He spoke at length about the new Island Fitness Center which opened. this year and is medically oriented with the goal of integrating {itness and wellness services with rehabilitation and stress management.
