Honorable Walter Lynn, Mayor
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - April 2006
We stepped up the pace in April with 48 calls for the month. There were 31 calls in the
Village of Cuyoga Heights, 11 calls in the Town of Ithaca and we responded mutual aid
6 times. We had 26 EMS calls and 16 fire catls. One of our mutual aid calls was for a
structure fire to the Village of Lansing. This call gamered some positive press for the
volunteers of the Cayuga Heights Fire Department when we assisted with the rescue of a
large snake from the residence. We also responded with our FAST team to Dryden in
Aprit. We were again extremely busy tlroughout the month and again EMS calls
ouhrumbered the fire calls for the month.
We train steadily as summer approaches. Last month we had an orientation training with
Bangs Ambulance at the station, a firefighter challenge training that pitted our firefighters
agaiist each other in a contest of firefiSting skills, an EMS training on OBGYN
emergencies as well as hosting and Incident Safety Officer Class at the station. We look
forwara to an EVOC class at the station in the month of May as well as several fire and
EMS trainings. Our training will continue through the summer at a slower pace and we
look forward to picking things up in the fall with the influx of our new members. The
Firefighter One class wrapped up in April with five of our members completing the class.
We were busy last month with events as well. We had our Annual lnstallation Banquet
on ApriI 22"d. A good time was had by alI at the banquet. We installed the new
deparfrnent offrcers elected by the company in early April. We hosted a free pancake
breakfast to the community and had a steady stream of people through the station that
morning. We had a barbeque for prospective recruits that was well attended. We held
this event to let those who have expressed interest in the fall class know that we are still
interested in having them join the departrnent and gave them an opportunity to see the
fire station and meet the officers and members of the Cayuga Heights Fire Department.
We are also hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive at the station on May 13'n and look forward
to a good turnout for this event.
" M ELP P R.EVE,IVT F I R.ES''
The station Xooks woraderfritr and atrtr of, our mennbers are working hard to colrtribute
toward this. We have soine naernbers interested in gardening and have taken pride in the
look at the front of, the station by planting f,lowers and mulching the garden planted out
front by the Ithaca Garden Cltib and making the fountain work again. The lawn work
was all done by the members of the deparhnent as weli. We raked in new topsoil in the
bamen patches outside the station and feltilized and reseeded the lawn. We water, rnow
arid rake to keep things looking tip top outside. The members of the departrnent have
been taking care of all the station maintenance recently.
Our bunker rooms are altr firll and the bunkers are perf, orming all their duties wetrtr. We
have no graduating bunkers this year and all the roorns wiXl remain full through the
srlrwner. We have had a couple of requests from str.ldent members looking to bunk over
the sumrner so we will continue with the excellent response times that we enjoy ttrough
the sohool year.
Sincerely,
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
d {-a
Gedrge Tamboretrle
