HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Monthly Report - March 2006.PDFCAYUGA [.{ E{Gr{TS F I RE D EPARTAI ENT 194 Fleasant Grove R.oad trthaca, NY 14850 (507) 257-2377 April6, 2006 Honorable Walter LYnn, MaYor Board of Trustees Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report - March 2006 The month of March was very steady for the fire department. We started the month strons. had a lult in the middle of the month, and then finished March by running seven callsin the 3i't. We had 21 runs in the viliage, 15 runs in the Town of Ithaca and responded mutual aid 3 times in March. There were22 medical calls and 15 fire calls for the month. As before EMS continues to dominate our calls. The calls for the month were pretty routine for the department but that did not stop our members from coming to the stationfor all the calls. We still averaged 11 members per cali. The members of the department in the Firefighter I class are all doing very well. Every night when there is training at the class that requires a piece of apparatus the Cayuga HJignts Fire Department sends down a truck and an officer to help out with teaching the clasi. This ailows us to monitor the progress or oru firefighters in the class as well as getting our more senior members time to operate the fire trucks during the training. Our members in the class appreciate the opportunity to train with our equipment as well as seeing their fellow frrehghters and officers closely following their progress. Nine *.*b.r, of the FAST team took an all day training offered in Dryden by Meridian Fire Training Solutions on Large Area Search tactics. This class focused on techniques used to search large areas such as bowling alleys, schools, movie theaters and other such high occupancy areas quickly and effeclively. The class was extremely beneficial to the mernbers of the pAsT team and now we have a much better knowledge base for these difficult searches. In house training is going very well. We did live fire training at the burn tower at the end of March that worked out very well for our members. Our training officers keep giving us interesting training options that engage our firefighters and keep us all on our toes. The fall recruit class drive is in full swing. Asst. Chief Stocker is following up with those people we have on ouf waiting list and we are planning an open hose barbeque in May to ,ho* those who have shownlnterest in joining the department around and give a quick introduction of the department and let them know what our expectations wiil be for them. We have visited the pVt basic and EMT Critical Care classes at Cornell University to try to recruit some of those people into the department. There are also several members ,' f.{ E[.P P REVEIVT F X R"ES'' of our community with past firefighting experience who have expressed interest injoining the department. Fire Council has identified this need for community members who have an interest and have past experience as people we need to recruit right away and get them into the department quickly to keep them interested. We will go out of'the normal recruit class time frame with these people to integrate them to the depanment. We are very pleased with this new interest in the department. Fire Department Elections took place on April 4th. We have a very good slate of officers for the Board to approve at the April iTtn meeting. We have one new officer on the roster after the elections. Lt. Matt Abbinanti moved up to an Assistant Chiefs position and Danny Wnek, former fire company president, moved into a Lieutenants position. We are very pleased with the slate of officers. The fire chief s position was filled for another two year term by yours truly. Lt. Wneks resume is attached to this report and he is the 6nly new officer to the department. All the other officers' resumes are on file with the villase clerk. The annual banquet and swearing in of offrcers is April 22"d atthe County Club "of Ithaca. The fire station is in great shape at this time. We will be putting down some top soil as soon as the weather breaks in the spots around the driveway that were laid bare by winter plowing. Our in house gardener is working hard at making the flower bed under the sign look attractive and we appreciate all her efforts. The fire trucks are all working well at this time. The Rescue 241 prplect is still a work in progress. Bid opening is April tr3th and at the meeting on the 17"' we hope to have a resolution for the purchase of the new vehicle for the board's approval. Sincerely, Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent EMERGENCY CALLS: 39 TOTAL CALLS YEAR To DATE I II7 Tofal Calls - 39 Fire Calls - 14 EMS Calls - 22 Total Mutual Aid - 3 Lansing - 2 Tompkins Airport - 1 Calls in the Village - 21 Calls in the Town - 15 TRAINING / MEETINGS / EVENTS: 316 - Fire Council 317 - Fire - Road Rally 3114 - EMS - ALS/BLS assessments at the HazMat Scene 3119 - Large Area Search Training 3122 - EMS - Respiratory Distress- ALS/BLS assessment and interventions 3127 - FAST Team Training 3129 ^ Fire - Burn Tower UPCOMING EVENTS: 411-7-14 - Incident Safety Officer Class 413 - Fire Department Elections 413 - Fire Council 414 - EMS Training with Bangs Ambulance 4111 - EMS Training 4119 - Fire Training 4122 - Annual Fire Department Banquet 4126 - Fire Training 4130 - Pancake Breakfast 517 - New Member Barbeque 5/13 - EVOC Training APPARATUS: All trucks working well STATION: Station looks great Cayuga Heights Fire Department Fire Department:55002 Companies:All Date Range:From 03/01/2006 to 03/31/2006 Box/Zone/ Code:All District:All Situation Found:All Exclude Mutual Aids:No Exclude Exposures:No Incident Run Log ncident# Date Time Address Occupant Numbel Situation Found Attendir E EMS call, excluding vehicle 1C1006-060079-00 03/03/2006 21:39 See NYS PCR#5-5510268. I have taken numerous classes with more scheduled for the near future' have attended every in-house training I could, and have spent a majority of my free time at the firehouse both before and after moving in as a bunker. I try to make myself available to help others whenever I can. As to my leadership skills, you the members have seen me at work in both my capacities as a firefighter and a company officer. Actions speak louder than words' and I hope that my abilities speak for themselves. you are far better suited to judge them than i am to describe them to you. Due to our low volume of "real calls," it's difficult to see how knowledgeable someone is and how adept they are at putting their knowledge into action. As an officer, you have to not only be knowledgeable; you must also have the ability to rernain level-headed and in control the entire time' I assure you I wouldn't be writing this letter right now if I wasn,t confident in my ability to meet the requirements of the position. I'm not asking you to vote for me on the first Tuesday in April; on the contrary, I'm asking you to vote for the member whom you,d feel most comfortable going in on a call with and who you would trust enough to be in charge at a fire scene' I simply hope that I have adequately demonstrated my abilities to be the Companv member you vote for. qhu-< Coursesicertifications to date: .
